Hi everyone,
I’m new here but I have been googling a lot and finding helpful information on this site, but I’m having a major problem with my piggies.

I just treated both of them for URI’s, less than a month ago, they finished their antibiotics on March 19th to be exact. They still have stuffy noses and are sneezing occasionally, anyone have any ideas why?

my best guess was the paper bedding in their litter box, so I’ve removed both litter boxes and am waiting to see if there is any improvement, but I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I use fleece blankets for their lining, there is not drafts around them and their cage is also covered around the outside to avoid any sort of potential drafts. They also have material hides (Sherpa). Any advice or someone who has gone through the same thing would be much appreciated!

A while ago my pig had a stuffy nose. Took her to the vet and she had a URI. After 10 days of meds she was fine. Not sure why yours would still have stuffy noses. Have you gotten them checked by the vet again?

I have not yet because I just noticed it today. I would think the antibiotics probably haven’t even fully left their systems yet?! I’m not sure what to do as I have previously treated one of them (twice!) before I had the other. They have no other symptoms of a URI other than the stuffy nose, may have to check in with the vet again.

If it doesn't clear up in a few days I'd take them to the vet. My pig was still sneezing for a few days after she was off meds but her stuffy nose cleared up in no time. Maybe they got reinfected somehow?

Yeah I’ll have to, I have no idea how they would get it again! I’ve been taking every precaution possible 😩 thank you!

How long was the course of antibiotics?
Its possible that if a dose isn’t high enough or if the course isn’t long enough that sometimes the bacteria can remain and take off again. I would take them back to the vet to be checked again.

If the vet confirms they are recovered from the URI, then ensure there are no irritants in the room such as candles, sprays, perfumes and that their hay isn’t dusty. Piggies have narrow airways, irritants and dust can cause them problems

It was a 10 day course and both of them had it based off of their weights so it should’ve worked. I removed the paper bedding (which I think was a little dusty) and they seem to be less stuffy already! But I’ll have to wait and see, thank you!
