I have recently adopted a New Guinea pig who was treated for a Uri. I have notice that he had still. Not stopped sneezing after being on baytril for 2 weeks. He doesn’t sound congested, he eats and drinks a good amount, he runs around and plays and seems to be ok, but I’m worried he might have a stubborn uri. Any ideas if he still has a URI?

Your best bet is to take him back to the vet. They’re better places to guide you. We’re not qualified vets and so can’t tell you. Hope he starts feeling better soon.

Does he have a friend?

Yes, he has an almost identical sibling. They both had gotten an uri and were treated and he seems to be ok, but I’m worried if he’ll get another uri.

It’s not a given that he will get it again. It may be his immune system will be able to fight it off.

Did you get them from a pet shop? If it’s very recent you should be able to get them to pay the vet fees. However, you should take them to an independent vet rather than the one they may use.

Hi!

URI can be stubborn to clear and he may need another course or another medication but only a vet can decide that after an examination.

If any pet is still showing symptoms after the end of the prescribed treatment, it needs to be seen again. You can reclaim any ongoing vet cost from the place you have bought your ill piggies as exposure and infection have happened there and you have been in effect sold damaged ware.

We did take them to our local vet. We got the piggies from a local pet rescue. These piggies were given up. I do plan on calling the vet and asking what they think I should do.

If you get your pets from a no medical treatment shelter (we don't have them in the UK; we only have no-kill rescues with medical treatment that will rehome only healed and healthy piggies), then you have to unfortunately pay up yourself. But good of you to take your two boys on.

A healed companion won't usually get re-infected and guinea pigs with a fully developed and healthy immune system are usually able to fend off any bacteria. URI is typically a problem in those where a weakened immune system combines with exposure to the respiratory bacteria.

Yes, I did take them to the vet because the rescue only treats cats and dogs for the most part, and they kept them under observation for 2 weeks while they gave them the course of antibiotics, the rescue said that the previous owners said they were about 2-3 old, and I got them back last Tuesday and been trying to keep an eye on them.

I did just take them out and deep clean the whole room from dusting to vacuuming and I opened the windows and put my living room air filter in the room to see if my room was just too dusty even though I dust it weekly. I making sure to let the temperature of the guinea pig room even out so I don’t create a draft because it is pretty cold outside.

I do feed them vitamin c treat every couple of days as stated on the bag. And I also supply a lot of fresh hay and veggies.I feel like I’m doing everything right but I’m still very nervous because I don’t have a detailed past on the piggies.
