Nibby&Sprout
New Born Pup
Hi Guinea Pig lovers
My adorable piggie Nibbles isn’t well and I’m struggling with it. About a year ago we noticed some lumps which the vet suggested were fatty deposits, very common and unless it was causing him pain to ignore. It wasn’t causing him issues so we didn’t biopsy. All fine seemed fine.
Roll forward to April and we noticed he was clawing at his mouth and showing symptoms of dentals issues so took him to the vet who looked at rear molars and said no issues. Suggested lymph nodes were enlarged so gave antibiotics. Seemed better but not quite himself, not popcorning or v happy but was eating and wheaking/mobile. A week ago I just knew he was unwell. Not eating his favourite foods or much hay but looking like he wanted to, so I started syringing and weighing daily. He’s lost 1/3 of his body weight this week, is lethargic and depressed.
The last week has been a lot of vet appts culminating in him being properly diagnosed with overgrown molars . He had surgery today and a biopsy for a fatty lump which is now off more concern. He’s also had an ultrasound which has ruled out hernia. I feel more confident in the vet knowing about piggies but don’t know if I did the right thing as he seems so sad (and so am I) and it’s >£1k. It’s not the money per se as quality of life.
He’s home now and I’m really struggling with the emotion of it . He’s still 2lb but feels very thin to me and just looks sad. I gave him some parsley which he licked but couldn’t eat. I know he just had surgery so I’m wondering how your piggies got on after dental work?
I have metacam to start from tmrw as he had an injection of pain relief today so expect he is perhaps still woozie from the GA. I’ll get my partner to syringe critical care again later.
Sorry for the long post. It’s hard to know what to do for the best. I think I need to just wait for the results and also give him a couple of days after surgery.
Thanks for reading.
