Hi all, I am new to the site and was the proud mummy of 5 wonderful little piggies until recently, I am now a devastated mummy to just 4. I unfortunately lost one of my sows, my beautiful Susie only 48 hours ago after she had surgery, a spay to be precise. I recently had all 4 of my sows spayed and my little boy neutered due to wanting to prevent health issues and so my boy could join his family. The first 4 procedures went well, apart from my boy developing absesses post surgery and having to undergo surgery again, fingers crossed he will now be okay. My little Susie only 2 years old was last to undergo her spay, the poor girl suffered with respiratory issues since birth, stasis last year and was troubled with cysts and a heart murmur, we nearly lost her a year ago due to her ill health. She was in and out of vets like a yoyo. The vet informed us she had a cyst pressing onto her lungs after the surgery, we then brought her home and unfortunately she passed in my partners arms, she began having some sort of seizure before we got chance to leave for the vets, she died at 1:30am the morning after her surgery. After informing the vet she said it could have been because she was overweight and now I feel this is all my fault for feeding her too much of her favorite treats. This has completely broken me and my partner and her beloved cage mate Ruby.
The guilt I am feeling is killing me. I am a huge sufferer of anxiety/ocd and have been struggling for the last 6 weeks, following a recent eviction and moving into a new property. Due to this, I have been a mess, constantly crying, screaming and had conflict with my partner. I didn't spend a lot of time with my Susie or the other piggies for all those weeks due to being a depressive mess. I am now feeling like this outcome is all my fault, that somehow my erratic and depressive behavior has weakened her and she has died because of my actions. I also feel that if I hadn't put her through the surgery this wouldn't have happened and I shouldnt have fed her as much as I did. When we brought her home she was so lethargic however, all my piggies were so I really didn't recognize that she was struggling, me and partner put it down to the anesthetic. I wish I could have done something more for her, spent more time with her and not put her through surgery. It has been 48 hours and we cannot stop crying, can't eat or sleep. I can't get those last moments and the guilt out of my head. I feel I will never forgive myself for this. She was so happy so why did I have to put her through the op. All I want is that time back that I selfishly wasted. She is now in a box on my fireplace instead of in my arms where she belongs.

I’m so sorry you lost Susiie sending big hugs to you and your partner :hug:Please don’t blame yourself, you gave her the chance of a more healthier life, sadly sometimes things don’t go to plan. Susie had quite a few problems and all operations do carry risks. You Have just been very unlucky in Susie’s case and that’s something no one can predict. The main thing she was loved and cared for and she will have known so don’t blame yourself, you did your very best for her.
Take good care of you and your partner and your little boar while you all grieve x

Sleep tight Susie 🌈

I am so sorry. Please don't blame yourself. If she had a cyst pressing on her lungs then a spay to remove it was the right thing to do but very very sad that she did not survive. Trying yo give her a healthier life was an act of love. I think if she had been dangerously overweight your vet would have advised against operating and with numerous health problems she may have only ever been able to live a shorter life than others. But piggies don't measure their lives by time, they take each day as it comes and if those days contained treats and love then she will have been happy.
Guilt is a part of grief, it is hard but remember you deserve self compassion too x

So very sorry for your loss.
It sounds as if you gave her the best care and so much love.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve.

Thank you so much for all your kind words. I really did try and give her all my love and the best care I could. Over the past year I have had so much bad luck with my babies, Susie with all her health issues, her cage mate Ruby with URI, Heidi my grandma pig with uterine tumor and Dexter of course with his absesses, the list goes on. Delilah has been my only pig without issues. I have spent almost £3000 on vets bills so we really have tried to be the best piggy parents possible.
Went to vets to get Dexter checked for more absesses today and broke down, asked again about Susie's surgery and now they are saying she did have a cyst near her lungs but wasn't big enough to affect her breathing. They said she could have developed a blood clot from surgery so now I hate myself even more. On top of that my Dexter started with a crackling noise and completely forgot to mention it due to me having a meltdown. I feel like such a bad person. Also, missed my own mother's birthday yesterday who is also in ill health because I was in such a mess. I've got so much to feel guilty for at the moment. I don't feel like I'll ever feel happy again x

I've lost 'healthy' piggies in the hours after a surgery with nothing obvious wrong with them at all so please understand that sometimes these things strike out of the blue. General anaesthetic is always a risk for small furries so although vets are as careful as they can be these things just do happen sometimes. Other people on the forum have had successful operations on very elderly piggies - you can't predict it.
I hope your boy recovers from his neutering. The only boy I ever had done went through with no issues at all - I'm not sure he even realised something had happened. The forum rarely hears the very many success stories but we do hear when it goes wrong and other boys have also developed abscesses - you are not alone there. However, it is still a reliable procedure and the reason I haven't had to have more boys done is that many rescues routinely neuter single boys before they are offered, which they wouldn't do if it was considered a high risk procedure.
Take care of yourself, and try and get some sleep. I know it's not easy but you will all get through this somehow. Your beautiful girl would have known how much she was loved and she was lucky to have you to care for her during her life x

I’m so very sorry you have lost gorgeous Susie. You made the decision to operate with love at the heart of it. We can’t look into the future. We have to make decisions based on the now. I recently lost my Percy to a bladder stone. If I’d have known he wouldn’t recover from the anaesthetic I obviously would not have put him through it. Don’t blame yourself. Just remember the wonderful life you gave her. ❤️

I'm so sorry to hear about your precious Percy and also to everyone who has lost a furry friend, the devastation really is unbearable. Thank you all again for your words of comfort. I feel like a part of my heart has died, grief really is a terrible emotion to cope with x

So sorry for your loss. I lost my piggy Dougal on Monday and am also struggling to cope with his passing. Sending hugs x
