Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but was hoping for some advise. My beautiful pig Betsy has had two abscesses in her 3 years. Both have been successfully treated. The last one occurred approximately 3 weeks ago. She was seen by Simon Maddock who performed her surgery and put her on a 2 week course of Zithromax. She has completely lost her appetite and lost a lot of weight. She has also lost her squeak. 😭 she was always so greedy and would squeak so loudly when I rustled a salad bag but now nothing. Her surgery wound has healed beautifully and I saw Simon yesterday for a post op check. I told him about her loss of appetite and he told me to syringe feed her critical care which I am doing but she absolutely hates it!
She has stopped taking Zithromax after completing the course so I am hoping her appetite will return once the meds have left her system. This morning though I noticed that her back legs aren’t working properly. She’s having to almost propel herself forward before taking a step. Could this be muscle weakness due to not eating and being weak? I’ve done everything I can to get Betsy back to good health over the years but it just seems to be one thing after the other. I called the vet this afternoon but they couldn’t get her in today. I’m just hoping for some reassurance if anyone has experienced anything similar? Sorry for the long post!

Hello. My piggy Pepper has had a tooth root abscess recently. He was on Zithromax for over 3 and a half weeks. He has lost a lot of weight as it really knocked out his appetite. I was feeding him 5 times a day. Sometimes feeding over 100ml. We too saw Kim and Simon. I was really worried about him and at times thought he’d never survive. But he’s doing quite well now. I really hope your piggy perks up soon. It took about a 5 days after stopping the Zithromax before I noticed him making more of an effort to eat for himself. Pepper didn’t have any leg weakness. Maybe your piggy is dehydrated because of the hot weather? Can you get Betsy seen by a different vet? Just to put your mind at rest? I really hope Betsy starts to feel better soon. I totally understand how stressful and frustrating looking after a poorly piggy is. Take care. ❤️

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

Thank you so much for your quick reply! That’s really reassuring to hear that Pepper regained his appetite after stopping the medicine. I’m really hoping for the same with Betsy. I also hope it’s just a case of muscle weakness with her back legs. I will take her back to Simon tomorrow if no improvements with mobility.
I’m glad to hear that Pepper is on the mend. ❤️

All the best for Betsy. Hoping you can get her seen soon and her mobility improves
