Hello everyone, so I have another thread regarding my Poppy’s surgery she had last week for a bladder stone to be removed and a hernia to be repaired. Despite an awful first few days requiring her to be readmitted at the vets and have fluids etc she really started to improve. Eating much better and pooping well. Mobility still a bit wobbly however but able to move around and walk and even tried to run bless her.
On Saturday she had what we believed to be a stroke/vascular event, the vet said this could have been caused by an embolism post surgery ?
Basically she fell to her side, but was moving herself but on her side, head tilted and had nystagmus (flickering of the eyes). She was rushed to the vets and they gave her midazolam (a muscle relaxant injection) because she was getting so stressed for an IV to be placed as initially we thought it was a seizure.
After coning round from the injection that had made her so sleepy and basically sedated she was eating so so well, however midazolam is also used as an appetite stimulant and I’ve seen cats at work be given it and then eat a bowl of food like theyve not been fed in days! She continued to eat really well Saturday evening once she came home, a bit sleepy and disorientated but the nystagmus had gone. She did have some delayed reflex of the eyes though. The next morning she was eating hay but then through Sunday she really declined. Refusing any food really fuzzy and hunched over. She was given more fluids and the vet re checked her reflexes and they had actually improved.
My question is does anyone have any experiences in caring for a piggie after a stroke and how long it took for them to recover. She’s quite sore in her tummy but did have a major surgery. But I’m not sure if she’s injured herself where she was flaying her legs about during the stroke. The vet said she did have adhesions from her last cystotomy when he opened her up.
She’s taking small amounts of food, but hates any syringes, she also keeps going in some kind of a trance which she was doing a few days post op still where she’d go all sleepy and sad and then when stroked and moved she’d sort of snap out of it and wake up. Especially when she’s eating. She’ll start eating something and then freeze with it in her mouth and then once I stroke her or stimulate her she’ll start chewing again. It’s so bizarre and I have no experience with strokes in piggies. It’s been an awful week! Any advice/experiences welcome xx

So sorry to hear all the stress you have been through, she seems like a wee fighter bless her. I can’t offer any advice however my piggie Thomas used to go into a trance often, especially when eating, and if you tapped him on the head it was like he restarted and would start chewing again, just like you described! He had never had a stroke though or any prior health problems, it was really strange.
I hope Poppy is on the mend, sounds like you have a really great vet behind you💖

I have no experience of this but just wanted to send you my support and best wishes. I hope Poppy gets well soon.
