Hi

When we purchased our cage from Jollyes we got a bundle of free bits. We specified it was for Guinea Pigs and the bundle included Straw for bedding. Since joining the forum I have noticed a few comments alluding to the fact that straw is unsafe for pigs. Could someone fill me in?

Many thanks!

It is bulky, has little nutritional value and stops them eating food that's good for them ( like us eating cardboard and bloating ourselves on it), but worst of all it's very sharp and can cause some very nasty eye injuries, so definitely best to avoid it.

So glad I've found this out through the forum. I'd have had no idea otherwise... you'd think a pet shop would know this!

Pet shops are just there to make money. They have no knowledge or interest in animal welfare.

That's why this forum is so good. There are some very knowledgable piggy keepers who can answer your questions. And even those of us who have kept piggies for years can often learn something new, too. On the whole people are non judgemental and just want to offer advice on what is best for piggies, sometimes opinions vary, but all the advice is good and well intentioned. Unfortunately pet shops even if well intentioned do not always give the correct advice or sell the correct products. Never be afraid to ask.

Thanks VickiA, as you say the advice is polite, balanced and clearly well intentioned and it's great to have a place to ask these things. Everyone is friendly and helpful, I'm so pleased I joined!
