do i use straw or hay,or am i being stupid because they are the same thing?/

Not stupid at all!

You need hay for guinea pigs. Straw is much coarser and there is a risk of injury from sharp pokes.

:)

I think that straw is barley, and hay is just dried grass. I don't think that straw is great for them to eat either. But they need to eat hay, so it's much better for bedding. :)

i am using fleece for the bedding, can i just give them a box of hay?

Yersh you can use a hay rack or tissue box to stuff hay in when using fleece :)

They need hay to eat (in a hay rack or tissue box ) and some hay to roll around in. I have a cheap cat litter tray and put some megazorb and hay in it but you could just use newspaper and hay. Change it every day or it will smell. Guinea pigs will just jump over the side and have a munch and root around.

I have 2 litter trays in this picture but only tend to have one now as they didn't use both.

if anyone was going to use straw i would only say chopped straw as ive had guineas in here with eyeballs shriveled up due to straw pokes , with them been indoors you dont really need straw just hay, ive found if you use a hay rack also put a litter tray under it full of hay they will wee and poop more in there and still have fresh hay to eat from the rack, so its less hoovering on your fleece as most the poops will be in the litter tray change this every day, put some newspaper down first then the hay on top x

Straw is what's left over from wheat and oat and so wheras hay is grown for itself, not for the seeds (I gre up in the city so correct me if I'm wrong :))!) The nutritional content of hay is much better but the soft/coarse is not always true. There's hay that's just as coarse and pokey as straw and the other way around.
