My 4 year female guinea pig (Hazel) is acting odd! She lives with her husband (neutered male Walnut) Roughly 4 weeks ago she did the same thing as today. So to start with she went off her food, didn't want to come out of hide house, couldn't tempt her with grass or dandelions. So too her to my vet, she had a through examination only thing he thought he could possibly feel was maybe a tiny ovarian cysts. So we came away with Emeprid and metacam. Literally 24 hours later she was back to her usual self eating, squeaking etc. So this morning she tucked into her cucumber and hay fine. But this afternoon she is not tempted at all by her tea or grass or dandelions. But seems to be looking for something and turning her back on everything. Any ideas?

I'm not an expert at all but she could be having some gas/bloat problems? I don't want to you worry though, so don't take this as a diagnosis. Sorry you're dealing with this :(

I’m sorry to hear this.

The best thing is to switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh her daily. This is so you can more closely monitor hay intake and step in with syringe feeding to replace the lost hay if there is weight loss of 50g or more.

Of course, another vet check will be needed to find out what is going on.
I assume she isn’t on painkillers any more?

It could be any number of things causing her some pain or discomfort. It sounds like she wants to eat but then doesn't because of how she is feeling, which you describe as "looking for something". When piggies stop eating or suddenly start eating less this can then lead to other problems such as bloat and gut stasis so she will need to see the vet again and go back onto the metacam and emiprid. It is not unusual for them to be back to normal after a couple of days on these meds, often without any reoccurrence of the issue or the exact cause being discovered. Repeated occurances tho may need further investigation.
