We have a lovlely piggie called Dolly who is usually very serene during lap time (she's a sod to catch tho. lol). Anyway, tonight she had been sitting with my daughter for quite a while and was enjoying munching on some carrot leaves.
Suddenly she panicked and tried to jump off M's lap - something she'd never done before. Melissa caught her but Dolly was desperate to get away from her and could not bear being touched - anywhere!
After a little while she relaxed enough to knaw some carrot but still would not tolerate being touched. This was totally out of character for her as Dolly usually loves being stroked and will sit for hours.
Does anyone have any idea what may have happened to make the poor thing panic so?
thanks -c

Something may have spooked her. It can happen. A guinea pig in panic works only on instinct and is not accessible to reason until it has calmed down, but it will take a bit of time to get over such a big fright.

Just start gently from square one and she will be your old Dolly soon! Give her lots of encouragement and reassurance and make a fuss of her.

I suppose you're right. Since going in with Mabel and her babes, although she gets on with them (well only the one now Mike is on his own -new pal coming for him next week - whooo hooo) she's reverted back to new piggie behaviour. Very hard to catch - behaves as tho she's terrified, but once caught quickly relaxes and enjoys her cuddles. She's also very shy about coming out of the beds if we're around preferring to eat in private. If I'm in the room for long enough and going about my business she does come out and eat with the others. But just glance in her direction and she's gone! It seems such a shame as we had got over all that pretty much and now she's gone backwards. I guess it will just be perserverance again :{

Dolly seems to be one of the more nervous ones; with them, it's mainly a game of patience and perseverance, but whenever they are in a more trigger-happy mood, you have to be prepared for them going off like that.

If it's any consolation, I have got one as well and take it very slowly with her... Pushing her as far as she will allow and then stepping back again if necessary.
