Hi,

I'm a bit worried about my female piggy. She went to the vet yesterday for her hormone injection which is Delvosteron 0.50ml, which she gets every 3-4 weeks for ovarian cysts, which is keeping it down and helping her with it. However this time we asked for a general check up mainly of her teeth due to being paranoid (she kept getting saliva down her mouth when eating veg) turns out it was just that...me being overly paranoid but since coming back she isn't eating too much shes just laying around picking every now and again, we gave her some veg and she just looked at it...were going out now to buy her favourite veg to see if that perks her up and we have critical care on the way (we had some in but moisture must have got in at some point without us realising) could there be a reason for this behaviour? As I know having their teeth checked can be a bit traumatic looking since they have a microscopic magnifier thing stuck into their mouth so they can see their molars at the back...I'm just concerned since if she's not eating it can obviously start affecting her pooping and peeing. Any help would be great, and if she hasn't picked up in another day or so we will be ringing back up to take her back.

Oh I’m sorry to hear about your piggy - I don’t have any experience but just wanted to reply and offer support. Sounds like you’re doing the right thing and ready to step in with special feeding. I really hope she’ll recover especially with her fav veg - sending healing vibes to your piggy 🥰

Thank you...I'm just really worried about her...she already goes through enough with her injections and having a hay poke a little while ago that nearly resulted in her eye having to be removed...luckily we got the hay out and her straight to the vet and got treatment but it took 5 weeks of eye drops and lubrication to heal it fully...while waiting I'm trying her on mushed up pellets so hopefully we can get something into her...

It’s possible she is just upset about the checks. I know mine (mostly the rabbits actually) sulk for a good day after a vet check.
With any luck she will perk back up and be feeling better by tomorrow but it’s good you’re prepared.

Thats what we're hoping...were really praying that she is just having an off day and after a day or two will perk up...we managed to scavenge some grass...luckily we have wonderful neighbours who allowed us into their garden to get some...and she ate a few strands...and she ate some mushed pellets off my partners finger since he allows her to nibble at him usually...weve bought her favourite veg in...ive opened a fresh bag of hay for her...changed her bedding so its a bit snugger...and she is spending extra time out today (we stay awake during the night so we can make sure they're warm enough since our houses temperature fluctuates so much) when she goes in she will have her screen on for a little noise so she can ignore her surroundings...so hopefully she will perk up after a day or two...its the eating were concerned over since she is an elder piggy now.

Switch to daily weight checks just so you can more closely monitor her eating.
Fingers crossed she feels better soon

We do that anyway with the piggies since they're elder piggies...it is always useful to do now I have the hamster trained to be hand held i can transfer her to a small tub to weigh her too...we did wonder if because the carry case was in the room maybe she was stressed that she was going back in it...so we have removed it from the room for her...

Update...she has only ate a few spinach leaves a little bit of cucumber...maybe a little bit of hay and a few bits of lettuce all day and a bit of crushed up pellets with water...she seems to have a desire to eat and will eat a few leaves then stop...we believe that something that happened at the vets is the cause either the teeth checking has hurt her mouth or it stressed her out due to we beleive that before us she never visited a vet before...we have her out and are trying to encourage her to eat...we are ringing the vet again in the morning although we are reluctant to stress her anymore but if we need to go then we need to go...does anyone have any advice on how to maybe entice a guinea pig to eat?

Oh I’m sorry to hear that - poor little pig - I don’t really have advice but weigh her every day at the same time and keep going with extra feed - I think you may need to return to the vet for a check 😥

We spoke to the vet on the phone this morning they gave some extra sachets of critical care while we wait for out new bag to get here (which should be in a day or two) and now my partner has just gone out because the small animal vet who normally sees her thinks he may know the issue and is giving us some meds for her...she has perked up a little compared to this morning...she has been getting some form of mushed food or critical care every 2-3 hours (she is on the smaller side anyway due to unfortunate circumstances before we got her) she still has some fight in her as she keeps head butting biting and pulling at my partners skin and dressing gown to try get away...and she is starting to eat little bits on her own...mainly hay...but its a start...were not going down without a fight...were hoping it has just been stress due to never having her teeth checked before thankfully he gave the all clear for her teeth...but lots a snuggled and everyone covered in mushed food is on the agenda until she starts eating on her own again...

Another question...I don't know if to put it here or on another post as it is still about potato...we have been given Emeprid oral solution is it OK to give her that then give her some critical care?

Thank you...she seems to have perked up a little bit...she has fight in her as she is still fairly going at my partner to try and escape...were noticing a bit of change in her poops...theyre still small and soft but they're bigger than they were in the early hours...which is a plus...I hope everyone is doing well...and has a good weekend...

Ah that’s good news - I know poops are a day or two behind so hopefully she is getting better - sending you all lots love for her recovery 🥰

Thank you...hopefully she will be oki...shes just sleeping loads but being force fed essentially will be stress enough for her so napping is the least of our worries...although she seems to have taken to the new critical care...once she realises what she's been given she starts taking it willingly now...until she's had enough it seems...

When I’ve had a sick piggy I’ve put a dish of the Critical Care in the cage along with a dish of raw oats & grated carrot .
It helps encourage eating and builds them up.
Yes - any cagemates do help!

We might try the oats and carrots she does get some critical care in the cage but she doesn't really bother it...she tends to only eat it when she's on my partners knee...she won't even eat it when she's on mine even though I'm the one feeding her it...I think maybe he represents safety to her or something we think...she doesn't normally eat carrots only every now and again but were willing to try anything for her to eat...she is nibbling with hay every now and again and a couple pellets...a few nibbles of cucumber as well...its a start...
