Anyone have any advice on how to make there cage smell better?! I have been using megazorb but had a bad experience with it (long story!) and don't really want to use it anymore. I am now using puppy pads with fleece on top and poo picking, but they still smell a little bit. I have air fresheners near the cage and around the room too. But just wondered did anyone have any tips :)

How often are you poo, hay, food picking? How often is the fleece changed over and washed? Fleece is generally the cleanest least smelly form of bedding, and is very popular with the members of the forum, perhaps try newspaper under the fleece. Another question, was the fleece washed a few times without fab cond beofre it was used? This is the only way the pee will wick through the fleece and not be absorbed.

The thing I found with fleece as other members have pointed out as well, is not to put too much in the washer as it will come out smelling more :)>>>
I have 12 piggies, four pens and each pen has two vetbed pieces along with cuddly fleece, cosies etc. One pen consists of two loads of washing so the bedding always smells nice. Tempting to cut corners sometimes but makes more work for me as it all has to be washed again rolleyes
A nice pet friendly disinfectant spray usually works, spray and leave for 10-15 minutes then wipe dry with kitchen roll. My OH fitted lino in the base of all our pens recently and that makes a difference too.

I generally poo/food/hay pick once or twice a day. And I have only just switched to fleece so not really got back into a routine with it, what would you reckon twice a week? I dont wash them with fabric conditioner, just powder. But do you think i should wash them in conditioner after a few normal washes? I quite like the puppy pads cause they really do absorb it up. Thanks for your reply :) x

So don't wash too many fleeces at once? I have four pigs and use about 4 fleeces for them all and would normally was them all together, is that to many? I have a pet friendly disinfectant, its not the cage that smells thats fine its just once they've been in hehe. Maybe there just stinky boys!?:)) xx

I find my boars are capable of creating much more of a stink than my sows if I let them. I think it's a matter of changing up everything more frequently, to avoid the stinky lol.

Haha, its good to know someone else finds them stinker :) I think i'll find a cure to the stink, just need to get a routine properly x

My boar really stinks! even after ten minutes in a fresh cage:))

Hmmm, must be just me then, but I love the smell of guinea pigs! I always give my Little Pig a sniff when I pick him up!

Me too!

LOVE IT! me too. :) my spice always smells lovelyyyy

I have to clean mine out daily or they really stink, I use newspaper and fleece. The fleece stinks of ammonia if left for more than a day even though it stays dry. I have no idea how anybody manages to leave it a few days it must stink to high heaven lol!

Haha, I always give my pigs a sniff and a kiss when there out of the cage. I just ment in the cages they stink! Haha x

Smelly Boars !

As soon as I put clean vet bed in, Bumble is straight in the corner and spraying it with his boar scent - it smells like it came out of a great dane and could choke you (Its so bad you could almost taste the big bits ,as my dear old dad used to say ! lol:)>>> Then he starts butt dragging his manly bits around - but when I get him out for a cuddle he smells lovely ! Sorry if I put any one off their dinner:)p

Don't worry TAN it is not that horrible:) they are just little alpha males:) they just mark their territory:)

I can't say I have too much stink! I have four boars on fleece but I do change everything every 4 days, i have a few fleeces and only ever put 1 fleece, cosy beds and 1 towel per wash (more because i'm paranoid about over loading my new washer like i did the last one) and also to make sure all the bits come off. But i do them on a sligtly shorter wash to get through them lol.
