Hi everyone, these are our lovely girls who are coming up to 3 years old, we have had them for about 9 months.

Both of them are very very skittish! I am pretty quick at picking them up now and my daughter loves to sit with them on her lap and stroke them, which they are fine with once they are there, but they do try to run when I try to pick them up, and will absolutely not let us stroke them if we put our hands into the cage! I have friends with piggies who will just happily sit there and let people stroke them whilst they are in their cages!

We have made some progress:
The black one is the shyer of the two - she will now nibble food out of our hands if she is somewhere sheltered, and she will venture out of her hidey to eat her veggies every evening (but will dash back into hiding if we approach)
The brown one is outwardly very confident - at dinner time she wheeks, comes to the edge of the cage and climbs up so her head sticks over the top! If I am cleaning she will come out for a good old sniff at the brush and likes to nose around to see what I'm up to. Generally if I am by the cage she will come out to say hello but if I stretch out a hand to touch her she runs like lightening.

Are we doing something wrong? Is there anything we can do to encourage them to let us stroke them or do we just have two skittish piggies who are unlikely to change? They were rescues so I don't know much of how they were treated before they came to the rescue and then to us.

What you are seeing is totally normal and to be expected for prey animals - most piggies will never like the act of being picked up at any point in their lives - it's rather like being attacked from above. Not all piggies like to be touched and that may be even more so when they are in their own territory.
We recommend they are herded into a box and then picked up from there.

Actually the fact they will eat from your hand and enjoy lap time means they do trust you and you have a good bond with them. This is the best you can hope for, and actually more than some owners get - my own piggies hate lap time and being cuddled (I dont do it, my handling of them is purely for health and weight checks)!

Ahh thank you, this is very reassuring to hear! They are beautiful and very loved. We will enjoy the lap time with them in this case and count ourselves lucky!
