Hi everyone!

I posted something on here a week or so ago about our new pig, Stig. He was squeaking every time he went for a wee and I asked for some advice. We tried the cranberry juice but he wouldn't drink it so we took him to the vet. The vet thought that it was a urinary tract infection and gave us some anti-biotics, (Baytril).

But, after five days of trying to syringe feed him, he's still not getting any better and it seems like it's his poos that are the problem. We thought he was squeaking when he wees but he's stopped doing that now. Can anyone suggest any reason why he might be squeaking when he poos and perhaps some remedy for it?

We are keen not to keep plying Stig with anti-biotics as he is only a baby and I have read that they can be harmful to the flora in a pig's stomach.

Once again, all suggestions are welcome!

Thanks!

Hiya,

Is he eating? What is wrong with his poops? Lack of them? Baytril should only be given to adult pigs as it can stunt growth Bactrim is the safe alternative for young pigs. it is effective for UTI's.

Is Stig eating? If not critical care should be syringed every couple of hours. Has the vet checked his teeth because with him being unwell and not eating his teeth may have grown.

He will need a pro-biotic to aid flora in the gut and to keep his appititie going Bio-Lapis is a good one to use.

Hope Stig improves for you.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. He is eating quite a lot, especially his dry mix; and when he comes out for his run, he's really happy and running around. It's just when he tries to take a poo that he starts squeaking.

I will try the bio-lapsis and see if that helps. I heard that the flora in their stomachs can die once anti-biotics have been given so I don't want to keep trying them if I can help it.

I'll let you know how he gets on.

Thanks again!

Great news that he is eating thats really positive. I would take him the vet again if he is struggling to poop though. :)

Hi eddieiscool. I remember your posting about Stigg from several weeks ago.

Are his poos normal and hard? And does he do lots of them ... if he does then that is normal for guinea pigs. Are you sure that it is when he does poos rather than wees that he is squeaking?

If he is struggling to poo but he is eating lots of veg and fruit, hay and dried mix, then I would consult a vet.

Keep us posted as to how things are going!

Quite often gp`s wee and poo at the same time, but if heamaturia is present it is more likely to be the urine.
I would take him to a vet and get an x ray done, there may be a renal stone in situ.
