Hi

We woke up today to find our largest piggie, Milly, with a piece of stick caught in her mouth. It was approximatly 8mm square and was blocking up her mouth entirely and obviously causing discomfort.

After some careful work with tweezers I was able to retreive it, it was caught on her bottom teeth and was pretty tough to remove. I don't think she could have gotten rid of it herself.

She looks fine and the teeth don't appear to be broken. She refused treats but likely this is down to soreness and fear. She is the most timid of the piggies here and it took some time to get the piece of stick out. Pretty scary for her. We will keep an eye on her to make sure she is able to eat later today and obviously take action if not.

Has anyone here ever seen this happen? The piggies get apple twigs to chew on and I wonder now if these are ok? They seem to love chewing them, and this is the first sign of any problem I can see. But I obviously don't want to carry on giving them if this is something which might happen again.

Many thanks

David

awww how traumatic for the poor little thing, thank god you could retrieve it, i have nothing to say advice wise, but just wanted to send a computer hug to your baby x

Thanks :)

We just went out and found the softest dandelion leaves in the garden for her and though she still looks pretty stressed she took them and seemed to have no problems eating. Very happy about that!

Oh poor little thing, that must have been painful. Glad she is eating the dandelions.

To ease any soreness she has in her mouth for the next couple of days, also to help prevent any infection getting in to the sore bits, you can use Daktarin oral gel for babies - about 1/2 pea sized amount twice a day. This should make it more comfortable for her to eat her dry food.

Unfortunately accidents do happen. I haven't had to remove anything from my own piggies mouths, however, my next door neighbor has a baby piggie and when I was stroking her I noticed her mouth looked a little funny. On inspection she had a seed a sunflower seed stuck in her mouth which was completely blocking her mouth. It looked as though she'd bit into it and it her teeth had got stuck in it so I managed to remove it for her. I don't think my neighbor had noticed so probably just as well I did!

Ah bless, poor little poppet. I hope she's not too sore. Glad to hear about the dandelions :)

Thanks everyone, I feel better now :)

Been nipping out to see how she is doing and while she still seems quieter than normal I think everything is fine. Gave me a scare she did!

Aww, poor little thing (and poor you too with all the worry). Glad she is alright and not done any harm. I'd guess her mouth would be a little sore after that, but should heal soon. xx

hmm. I just took another look at the bit of wood, and I don't think it was part of an apple stick at all. Looks like it was a bit of hutch!

my only thought was to keep an eye out for any abscess forming from teh injury - we seem to have had a spate of them on here recently

Yeah, We have been keeping an eye on her. Everything looks normal thankfully. I don't think she was hurt. Just a little shaken up.
