Hi

I've bought a second hand cage that someone use to keep rabbits in.

Can I use Milton to disinfect it or is it just F10 that we recommend?

Don't want to risk passing something to the piggies.

Posted in health and illness as it seems to be where other disinfecting posts go and it is to prevent illness. Feel free to move it though.

Thanks.

Just to clarify. This is what I was intending to use.

I think F10 kills any fungus spores and well as disinfects any bacteria

I would use F10. Milton won’t kill certain things so I personally wouldn’t use it in this situation

I'd go with virkon or F10. You can use the serialising fluid to clean the bottles weekly or monthly when they're being used by your pigs but if you are getting it second hand. I'd use F10. 😊

Kool. Will buy some F10 then. We just use Milton at work to disinfect lots of stuff didn't know if it was similar.

Are the ones on amazon a reasonable price? It's £14 for the 100ml one you dilute. Is that normal for F10?

Yes that's a normal price. It lasts forever though so although it may seem a lot to pay out, it works out quite cheap. For normal use its 1ml per litre but as you're disinfecting an old rabbit cage, I'd go at least 2ml for every litre. The instructions on the back are so small you'll probably need a magnifying glass unless your eyesight is 20:20 and you're in good light!

Hi

It takes me about a good year to go through the whole concentrate bottle with cage cleaning and disinfecting for 24 piggies - personally, I find that excellent value for money. That is about £1 per month for keeping plus/minus 10 cages clean so with less cages it will last you a very long time!
F10 also comes in handy in the house, for instance with norovirus transmission prevention via touching buttons or appliances before the hands have been thoroughly washed where normal antibacterial spray won't be enough. especially when living with a frailer person.

I disinfect for potentially serious contagion issues (including ringworm in guinea pigs) and the twice yearly full deep clean of the whole room at the maximum concentration recommended (see label) but use the lowest level for regular cage cleaning.

In a much lower concentration, F10 also works as an antiseptic that is also safe for inhaling or flushing abscesses in guinea pigs but you'd better buy that separately as a ready-made antiseptic solution and there are other available options, like saline solution or hibiscrub.

I hope that this helps you for your decision making? I would also recommend it for fully disinfecting a dubious rabbit cage before use.

I can only agree! The concentrate lasts absolutely ages so it may seem expensive but isn’t in the long run!

When you make it up definitely do it in a higher concentration as it used to be a rabbit cage

Thanks. This is all really useful. The cost didn't bother me, happy to pay seen as cage was free and it keeps piggies safe. Been meaning to get something similar for a while anyway as a "just in case".

Was just checking it wasn't one of those random things that is massively more expensive on amazon than everywhere else. I have a month until we go so I didn't need to pay over the odds just for their quick delivery.

With F10 do I need to rinse down anything I've sprayed with it or is it OK to just spray and wipe with it?

You don’t need to rinse but,

Which f10 did you use? Was it F10sc (which is just disinfectant) or F10SCXD (Which is disinfectant with added detergent p)
As the F10 XD version contains a detergent as well so you may find it gets soapy and may need a bit of a rinse

I have no idea. I used a tonne of it and it didn't get any bubbles so I presume the non-soapy one! 😂
