Hi everyone,
My boy in April this year was diagnosed by vet with sterile IC. We are managing it with cystease , potassium citrate, diet and metacam.
His had a course of cartrophan injections which responded well. I feel that I can never get him off of metacam. When he has a flare his on 1 ml of cat metacam twice daily. Then after 2 weeks we decrease it , his fine then he has a flare every 2 weeks of faint pink blood for 3 days then his wee is clear.
Am I thinking that with sterile IC he will always need metacam until it eventually goes away?
His holding his weight and is nearly 1,300g.
Anyone else on here giving long term metacam with sterile IC.
Thank you.xx

Both my boys were on long term dog metacam for urinary and other issues and had no ill effects from it 😊

I have a piggy on long term metacam for bladder issues. She has 0.3ml or 0.4ml twice a day of the dog metacam and has done for over a year with no ill effects.
If your vet is expecting your piggy to be on it long term I would ask them about prescribing dog instead of cat metacam as it is both stronger and comes in bigger bottles so will work out more cost effective for you.

Thank you for your reply. He was on dog metacam 0.35 mls twice daily. But my vet said that now they give guinea pigs the cat strength. Which his on now 1 ml twice daily. I will ask them if he can go back on the dog one. And get a prescription written out for online again.

Our piggy Mavis has sterile IC and has been on a low dose of Metacam for more than 3 years. It was 0.2ml twice daily but as she now also has arthritis the dose has increased to 0.4ml (x2). Mavis is 6.5 years old, so it doesn't appear to have done her any harm.
