Hey everyone,

So my girl Dizzy has been having bladder problems since late August. We have tried multiple doses of antibiotics with no luck and X-rays and scans show no stones so we now believe it is sterile cystitis she has. She is currently on meloxicam and paracetamol twice daily along with 1 Cystease capsule twice daily but we are yet to see much improvement and are struggling to get on top of things. She is clearly still in a fair bit of discomfort when she toilets and also gets a wet bum on and off. Scans have also shown the walls of her bladder are very thick. She has been on 2 capsules of Cystease consistently for 6 weeks now, I’m aware that it can take some time for the glucosamine to build up in the bladder, but I thought we might have seen some improvement by now.

My vet has been in touch with another exotic specialist and they have recommended surgery to to remove some of the thickened tissue on the bladder wall and potentially do a biopsy as well. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this? My vet is willing to try cartrophen injections so I’m obviously inclined to try them first but I was just interested to see if anyone had any experience of this procedure as I’ve done a fair bit of reading on sterile cystitis and haven’t come across this.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome

We haven't come across bladder wall surgery on here, either so I cannot comment on whether a biopsy is going to be helpful or not. A lot is still not known about sterile cystitis. :(

This link here gives a bit of an overview on the various urinary tract infections and what we know:

Thanks for your response. Yes I didn’t think I had come across any threads regarding the surgery on here so it does make me slightly apprehensive!
Dizzy has an appointment at the vets on Monday so I will have to ask a few more questions before we go down the surgery route I think. Thanks again 😊
