I think squeak might have static lice/hay mites....
I've been seeing a few black dots on her back/ bum area for a little while but didn't think much of it but today I've noticed she had a small area near her face (probably the size of a 5p coin) that is full of black dots. It's a very small area I know but I'm thinking its static lice because the dots won't go when I brush them...? This is really the only area that looks affected... He do I know it's definitely static lice? I can't see the little black things moving at all but they are very small.... Thanks for any help

Hi there, loosely speaking there are too types of fur mites, the type you're talking about Chirodiscoides caviae (Static Lice) are usually harmless, unless the piggy is absolutely over run buy them,

the best by far, and safest treatment to my mind is Vet sect repel shampoo , it is very effective against all fur mites /lice , and also as good antifungal properties

There are other potions and lotions that are supposedly designed for Guinea pigs, but myself , I have found them somewhat ineffective and not good value .

I have used lice n easy from gorgeous guineas with great success with lice and also used Johnsons small animal insecticidal shampoo too, both take two washes 7 days apart but not had a problem since after using either.

Will it harm her if I do this even if she hasn't got lice? I'm not sure if she has?

It won't harm to shampoo her with one of the mentioned shampoos, also "Flea or Die" is great as well : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Herbal-Health-Flea-Shampoo-250ml/dp/B004CDLOGU

If you want to be certain, lift the fur at the back end towards the rump, take a piece of sticky tape & press it firmly up against the fur roots, then look at the black "Specks" under a microscope or magnifying glass & you will see the static mites waving back at you lol :D These come from hay, so you need to bin the hay you have, clean the cage thoroughly & wash all plastic toys, houses etc in hot soapy water & rinse. Any wooden toys/houses & Chubes need to be thrown away to stop re-infestation. :) I use either Oxbow Timothy hay or Alfalfa King Timothy hay & I have not had any problem with static mites since. These hays are imported from the US & are heat treated so there are no mites in them.

Here are some links that might help you identify the spots.

Does anyone have a contents/ingredients list for any of their gorgeous guineas products. I have looked at the website and can't find anything to tell me what's in them apart from the odd vague description. Yet they mention a lot about other companies using dodgy ingredients or not listing any ingrdients on packaging. I tend to be wary of companies that act this way.

There is a general idea on the shampoo page http://gorgeousguineas.com/shampoos.html gives you a rough idea what they contain. If you emailed Chrissie sure she might be able to help you out with an idea. Its natural and olive oil based carrier along with essential oils to deal with different skin problems and hair types. I do use gorgeous guineas products for treatments such as the manuka and neem for fungal and my vet is very pleased with the results said the stuff she would have given me would be much harsher on his skin and had cleared it up just as well :)
