Hi everyone
Just found out my 5 piggies have got static lice/mites not sure if got them from breeder or the hay never had trouble before my new piggie so not sure how or why they have them. I've order static lice shampoo farriers I think it's called tried ordering georgous guineas lice and easy but everywhere is sold out but wanted something as wanted to treat my furbabies as quick as I can. I have also treated them with ivermectin which I'll repeat in 4 weeks time then 2 to 3 months there after it's the beapher anti parasite spot on I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for me please as I have never had to deal with this ever so I'm little stressed about it I will be bathing once and week for 3 to 4 weeks aswell just so I know there is chance they will be gone.
Thank you kindly
Natasha

Hay mites are annoying but least concerning of the mites (mange being the worst) .

However, the beaphar product you have used is nowhere near strong enough to deal with an active infestation and at four weekly intervals will not catch the mites properly. You risk prolonging the outbreak and therefore costing more in the long run because you will still need to see a vet to get the correct product

You need to see a vet to get the correct prescription strength ivermectin treatment to be able to deal with this properly. It needs to be given as per vet instructions but this is usually three doses two weeks apart.

We do not recommend any regular or preventative treatments. This can lead to resistance forming and therefore rendering treatment much less effective. Please only treat an active case if and when they occur and only using a correct prescription strength product

Hi

Please always see a vet for a proper diagnosis, quality products and treatment when it comes to skin parasites. It is not an extravagance as you end up spending more ineffective shop products through long term under-treatment and only prolong your piggies' dicomfort - and still end up at the vet's with a much worse case in the end. :(

Please be aware that beaphar is too low dosed to deal with an acute outbreak and that it is bascially a waste of money that is better invested in good quality treatment. It has taken us a lot of digging around but the concentration is still the old low 'prevention' dose and frequency which will only lead to encouraging resistancy but will definitely not do anything to get on top of the lice - whatever it says on the label!

I haven't come across the static lice farriers shampoo, so I can't comment on its efficiency and would not recommend to use it on spec without seeing it used by vets first but our experience with the Gorgeous Guineas shampoos is that won't necessarily do the trick on its own.

This guide link here has more practical tips on how to deal with static lice in terms of hygiene and egg removal to help limit the outbreak (you will still need to use vet strength ivermectin to get on top of the mites themselves).
