should I try to clean it up or get a new one

Oh thats nothing! A good scrub with a stiff brush and whatever you use to clean your hutches with disinfectant or soap wise and then repaint with something like Cuprinol garden shades or the wilko's alternative :) x

Ive taken hutches fit for the bin, scrubbed then and painted them up and they all come up well :-) paint makes it easier to keep them clean and seals the wood too so well worth looking at

@Bekki what do you use to scrub with? I must admit I use whatever is to hand, washing up liquid, diluted bleach or Jeyes Fluid if its from unknown origin. I do wash and rinse very very well though.

Depends on how bad, I have been known to use a sander followed by bleach and a metal spatula for further scraping if needed if I know the hutch isnt going to be used for a good while. Also a good rinse with the hose on the thick spray helps too. Jeyes fluid is another I use... just whatever is on hand followed by a good rinse with the hose and its painted over anyway which seals anything in anyway.

Thats my thinking as well @Bekki. Its going to be well washed, dried out thoroughly and painted over anyway so I am comfortable using Jeyes or bleach.

@the boys dont bin your cage! If you dont want to renovate it, I'm sure someone will!

I hope so I don't wanna bin it.
I've scrubbed at the roof which is where the mould. I've used salt water.
One reason I don't want it is because they have a two tier cage so I would like them to have two tier hutch
the bit of wood separating the room needs replacing as it has fallen to bits on my hand

I need to put a new floor in a 5ft two tier hutch (I was given it) this weekend! It collapsed with a bunny in it! Not my bunny I hasten to add.

At least it weren't your bunny. Thank goodness
I think I may try to build on top of the hutch. To make it two tier

ouch .. what is that hutch made of :S even my cheapo hutches have never done that :-( poor bunny ... I'm sure you'll make it an awesome hutch though :D

@Bekki It was a pets at home bluebell hideaway! Bunny now has a home with a mutual friend in a more suitable hutch with access to a secure garden and i have the hutch to rennovate. Bunny also chewed through the door at the top!

Initially i was going to rennovate it for my rabbit but I think i will make it into a two tier piggy hutch for two separate pairs.

Are you happy to use Cuprinol? I made enquiries and was advised not to use Cuprinol for pet hutches as it contains a fungicide.

It is widely used by rabbit owners for hutches, sure it states pet safe once dry on it?

I would advise people to check before using. When we 1st got our hutch, I made enquiries. B&Q advised not to use their wood care products as they couldn't guarantee. Wilko said their range was safe once dry. Cuprinol forwarded me to an organisation who advised against using because of the added fungicide.
Of course, it is only a problem if the guinea pigs chew the wood that has been painted - but mine have a habit of chewing anything they're not meant to .

Edited to say i just checked and its pet safe once dry even for animals that gnaw. The garden shades is a different product to the cuprinol wood preserver.
back in the 80s we used to paint the hutches with creosote! Thats banned now, you can even paint a fence with it!

I have used the cuprinol garden shades for a few years on hutches.......I thought it was pet safe too.

I have dug out the email I received from Cuprinol customer services (Jun 2013 - shows how good my email housekeeping is )

We would normally recommend Garden Shades but if you are concerned about the Guinea Pigs constantly chewing then I would advise to contact Technical Paint Services on 0845 230 1244 who will assist you in sourcing a suitable product.

I did ring technical paint services and it was a gentleman from there who advised me not to use Cuprinol because of reason I have already mentioned.

I think he was airing on the side if caution as he did then say it would only be a problem if the pigs ate the painted wood.

I like to play on the safe side. I would never use Cuprinol on the anything in the interior of the hutch. Outside should be OK
