Hi,
I'm a new caview daddy to a month old Silkie sow from the Philippines.
I've had her for almost 2 weeks now.
When I initially got her, I tried feeding her Meadow grass hay which she totally ignored, that's understandable as she didn't touch her veggies too. I assumed that she's still in the adjustment period at the time.
I switched to giving her Alfalfa hay but she would only eat a few bits and completely ignore the others.
She'll turn 2 months in 3 weeks and I'm wondering if this is a young guinea pig thing, not eating Hay and wanting to eat Muesli or Veggies (Lettuce and chinese pak choi) and cabbage instead?
Also, I've recently purchased Stargrass Hay as it is difficult here in the Philippines to buy Timothy Hay, is this really good substitute to the latter?
Thank you!

Stargrass hay is a good choice based on where you live.
How are you offering the hay?
I find mine are more likey to munch hay if I put it in a large box or tray so they can really burrow in it and rummage around to find the tastiest bits.

I usually just leave a bunch on the floor but she doesn't seem to like it. Though she would chew on bits and pieces every now and then. I tried putting some in a box last night and I've yet to check if she'll like it

I think her teeth are fine based on how she chews on other stuff, cage bars included
Thats good then, haha watch out for the bar chewing, else the teeth could break, having another pig may stop this. Could be a boredom thing, also your current pig will copy the new one at hay eating. If you do decide to get another, read up on the bonding guide first👍

My sow once bonded with my neutered boar ate much much more hay than she did when alone.

Cool, should I get a piggie who is older or almost the same age as hers? She loves lettuce a lot but won't eat enough hay

Try some different hay, there’s a variety available on Amazon, Look up oxbow or burgess excell. Your piggy will benefit greatly from having a friend, they will almost compete for food and eat more quickly. It is vital for there overall health and well being. Hay should make up 80% of their daily diet, the pellets (not muesli) should be 10% and veg 10% or there abouts.
