so my new guinea, albert, has a bit of a squinty eye. the person at the pet store said he was about 4 weeks old. he has his own cage away from my other girls. i’m very worried because he has one squinty eye and there’s a bit of light yellow gunk coming out. the other eye is completely fine. he hasn’t been pawing it or anything, just squinting. i’ve put him in the cage with the girls a couple of times with supervision at all times. i don’t know if he got some of his bedding (cedar wood chips... my other guineas hasn’t had a problem) in his eye or something, i’m worried. should i wipe it with a paper towel with warm water first? because i don’t have a lot of money to take him to the vet just yet, unless it’s an emergency. and you can still see it’s half open, but when i pet him or set him down he squints it fully.

Hmmm “if” there is something in it then it’s not always obvious and leaving a foreign object in the eye for a prolonged period of time can do some more serious damage.

I’m not saying there is something in it, but it does look uncomfortable and could benefit from some eye drops from the vet.

yeah, i think there may be. i’m going to wait a couple of days, and i really hate to. i’ll see if my dad can help me take him to the vet if it doesn’t stop. i might wipe his eye with warm water and see what happens. i just don’t want to hurt him.

Please ask you Dad if you can go today. Eye injuries are very painful and need to be treated promptly. If you are in the UK - you may be able to get a standard rate appointment - even at the weekend.

sadly, i am actually not in the up, and i probably couldn’t go today because i am extremely busy. i really really hate that i have to wait

@clawsboo An eye injury can get very serious quickly and he could end up needing surgery to remove the eye.

If you go now the vet will be able to remove the foreign body and prescribe medication to help it heal.

You may not want to hurt him but he's in pain already, that's why he's trying to keep his eye shut.

His eye definitely looks sore and possible infected/have something in it. Eye problems can quickly get very serious so I would class this as an emergency, he needs to see a vet ASAP x
