Hi, my caramel has been weeing and squeaking at the same time, as of Thursday her wee was red, so I took her to the vets and he said she’s absolutely fine.. but to give her metacam if it carries on.. she’s done this before and it’s disappeared after a few days/maybe a week.

As of her diet, we had stopped giving her kale until around a week ago, but we had only been giving it to her about twice a week and about one handful at a time as I know it’s very high in calcium and can cause kidney and bladder stones, so mostly she’s been having watercress, coriander and dill and fresh hay (and grass if she’s been outside.) I’ve now stopped giving her kale since she started squeaking and weeing.. just wondered if anyone knew what could be causing this and if you think I should see the vet again? Otherwise she’s been completely fine, her poos are all normal and she’s been eating well and generally seems fine in herself. As of tonight her wee hasn’t been as red. Here is a photo of one she did this evening.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Is that urine coming out that colour?
I assume the vet did a urine test and there was no blood for you to be told she is fine?

A handful of kale twice a week is still too much. One small amount (when I give kale it is literally two leaves) and only once a week is plenty.
Safe daily veggies are bell pepper, coriander, lettuce and cucumber.

Hi. Blood in urine and squeaking whilst urinating could be a uti or something like bladder stones or Interstitial cystitis but most vets will treat for a uti first before investigating further unless a bladder stone is highly suspected.

Although metacam is great for pain and inflammation, it won’t treat a uti, only a course of antibiotics will do that so I would be asking your vet for antibiotics at the very least

Yes, that’s the colour it came out. I thought red wee was common for guinea pigs? Yeah I’ve stopped giving them kale now! Thanks.

No, clear ish or milky white wee is common.
Red can be because of blood or porphyrins (a natural dye) which can be the sign of the onset of a UTI or cystitis.

Also on diet, I can’t remember where watercress falls on the calcium rating (it is good for vit c though) but dill is slightly higher in calcium and is best kept a bit more limited - fed once or twice a week. It’s definitely not something I would give too regularly and save it more as a treat along with other higher calcium veggies such as parsley, spinach and kale

It wasn’t blood I don’t think, they usually have red wee after they’ve been outside, I’ve been told it’s common for them to get red wee. He didn’t do a sample though! I’ll take her back on Tuesday if it continues. He felt her tummy and wee hole and said he couldn’t feel anything like bladder stones. Yes he said he could prescribe antibiotics if it gets worse.

Right okay thank you! I’ll take her back on Tuesday!

It doesn’t look like blood (blood tends to separate out differently when it dries) but we aren’t vets and really testing it for blood is the best way to know for sure - perfectly clear urine can still test positive for blood during the onset of a UTI.

urine can turn rusty orange/brown when it hits the air, that is normal oxidisation
