My 1yr old sow Harriet has started making a very slight squeak/whimper which I suspect is when she pees (it's defo not when she poops) we took her to the vets last week and she was prescribed baytril and emeprid as she thought she was a bit gassy. her weight has remained constant throughout, however, she seemed to get worse almost straight away, she was listless, facing the corner and all puffed out, I was so worried I didn't really know what to do and I got frightened that the antibiotics were making her worse so I stopped them (I kno I Probs shouldn't have but I was scared I was losing her) anyway, she perked up a little after she stopped the meds, I've given her diluted unsweetened cranberry juice daily but unfortunately the squeaking is back.. I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow, firstly, which antibiotic do u recommend for urinary Probs? I've only ever been given baytril. The vet was worried about prescribing metacam as she said it can affect kidneys and as a kidney problem hadn't been ruled out she wasn't keen. Any other pain meds? I gave her probiitics alongside the baytril. The vet was really lovely and open to suggestions, I'm in the process of TRYING to get a sample to take! Any advice? Sorry for long post I'm at my wits end!

To take a sterile urine sample, pop her into a clean bowl & syringe some wee up in a sterile new syringe which the vet can give you when you get the meds. With regards to antibiotics, some piggies are affected by Baytril, we find Septrin best for UTIs or Marbocyl. She will need pain relief, Metacam should be fine unless she definitely has a kidney problem. It's best to give some pro-biotic after antibiotics, like Pro C or Avi-Pro to help re-balance their guts. Hope she feels better soon :)

Thanks for your reply, I know I shouldn't have a favourite pig but she is the funniest pig I've ever had, she is such a diva :D I hate seeing her out of sorts.

This will help getting a sample, the fresher in the morning the better, but the vet can dipstick it for blood How To Collect A Urine Sample

I would speak to the vet regarding Septrin, it tends to be very good for UTI's and metacam for the pain/inflammation. If after another course of AB's I would consider getting an xray to ruke out stones, but most of the time UTI's are responsible

Thanks for that, I'm kind of stuck with vets because it's a close family members practice and we just pay for what they use, I took my last pig to gilmoors and it caused ridiculous family rows so it is my last resort. The vets I'm taking her to do actually have an experienced Piggie vet whom we normally see but he's on his hols! I am taking her in my lunch hour so will have to get the sample tonight, she's been in her box for almost an hour and no sign of peeing.... I might start running the tap lol

I always say "tinkle tinkle" when trying to get a wee sample from one of mine. Of course it never works. Have you syringed her some water?

Yup, she never ever pees outside of her cage she's such a good girl, she's just holding it in :/

We have pee :) flamin' Nora she didn't want to give that up! It's defo a pained whimper when she urinates :(

Hi everyone, just an update, Harriet had a couple of xrays as her pain was getting worse, there are no stones present which is good news, unfortunately she has inflammation in the bladder lining so she's now on septrin and metacam as u all previously advised :) she's still eating and her wait has remained constant, she seems okay I herself but I know she's not right, luckily the Piggie vet is back from his hols :)

If the problem continues i would maybe ask about cystease- its a medication for cystitis. I am going through this with my sow at the moment, she has her xray in the morning.. HOPEFULY no stones and we can try her on cystease. The loxicom really helps her so it does seek like inflamation in her case too.. And once i reduce the dose, the squealing comes back.

All the best :)

Poor thing. At least you've found out what is wrong - and started treatment .

Hi, can I ask what loxicom is? Is that an antibiotic? The vet did mention cystitis could be the problem

Loxicom is another name for metacam, its a painkiller /anti inflammatory. They both come in dog &cat strengths so the doses may seem a lot higher or lower than if you see doses somewhere else or if u have used them before, it may be the same dose just in a different strength so different quantity.
Tell me to shut up... I'm rambling!

If it is cystitis I think @helen105281 has a good piggy diet sorted to help prevent problems where cystitis is concerned.
Also I have made up barley water that seems to help when any of mine have had problems before medications have had the chance to kick in.

Good luck &keep us posted
Xx

Hi all, she has been on Septrim and Metacam for ten days, she is eating and drinking as normal and looks well, her weight is unchanged, unfortunately she is still squeaking when she urinates, we are back at vets on Tuesday, I don't kno what else to do :/

unfortunately there isn't a quick fix with bladder inflammation so try not to get too down just yet (easier said than done) - alot of non-piggy savvy vets will under-dose medications, especially metacam so i would discuss the doses with the piggy savvy vet when they are back off holiday, or consider going to the other vet recommended above (to be honest i'd do this option because bladder issues can be complex)

the course may need to be alot longer than ten days, the doses may need changing, and more tests may need to be done.

we are going through this with mollie at the moment (six months in) so you are welcome to read her thread if you'd like, see if anything helps (we had alot of good advice from people on here which may help you) :)

Ahhh, it's reassuring to know it's normal to take a while, the Piggie savvy vet is seeing her on Tuesday, have to take another sample!

I am going through exact same thing with my sow (commented further up I'm sure). She had several episodes of blood in urine, last episode had no blood but squeaking when urinating. She was put on septrin (same antib that fixed every other episode) but for an extra 2 weeks, ontop of the 10 days she already had. First ten days of metacalm and septrin- no change. Xrayed her, no stones. Urinalysis showed no blood or crystals. So now Another ten days in, after adding in Oxbow natural science urinary support (like hay tablets), she has stopped squealing altogether and that is with her now only on literally 1/6th of a dose of a metacalm (been weaning her off slowly). I'm not sure if its been longer course of antibs or oxbow tablets, but hopefully it keeps doing the job. Might be something to try, definately does no harm. I find these oxbow natural science tabs excellent, i've used urinary, digestive and vitamin c varieties. Hope she picks up soon x

Hi sorry for late reply, I'm thinking she may be ok, had 3 weeks of septrim/metacam and fingers crossed she seems better. Had a terrible time getting urine sample off her as she doesn't pee when outside her cage and when she eventually does....She sits in it and it soaks into her fur! So after the teeny tiniest amount ever, the vet said there was no blood in it anymore but thought the protein still was a little high. Not entirely sure what that could mean? Can I ask what these oxbiw tablets are I've never heard of them? And vet thinks she might be susceptible to UTIs so any advice would be welcomed? She LOVED watered unsweetened cranberry and sucked it out if the syringe lol

Glad she is doing better! You can buy them off of amazon or various pet websites (the hay experts for example). They are made by oxbow, that make excellent quality food and hay for gps and other furries. They have a science support range, which is basically supplements. They are just compressed hay and supplements moulded into a disc shape, good for the teeth as take quite a bit of gnawing! They do a "urinary support" one, and contains various elements and herbs etc that all aid in good bladder function like natural diuretics/natural anti inflammatories.. They dont do any harm and i do believe theyve helped crunchie this time around!

Hi , glad that she may be ok,
