Hi,

Have recently brought home two female guinea's who are 8 weeks old.

Over the last couple of days they have had a couple of squabbles where they bash noses a bit, make a few squeals at each other and then spend the next hour sitting in opposite corners to each other. For the rest of the day they are best friends though!

Is this usual ? Was wondering if it was a dominance thing for them to determine who is in charge?

Many THanks
Claire

If you've had them only for a week, then they are probably still working out the dominance, and nose bashing is one of the things they do. The dominance thing can take weeks sometimes, so don't be worried; by the end of it they should be best of friends.

You will notice that two guinea pigs quite often like to spend some time apart from each other, anyway, before they meet up again. Like we don't like somebody sitting in our pockets ALL the time!

If in any doubt, always take them to the vets! Mites treatment doesn't cost the world, but you want to have the right diagnosis and the proper treatment.

Mites are best treated as quickly as possible.

If you haven't got a vet yet, you might like to see whether there is a recommended vet anywhere in your reach? The list has been compiled by members and is not complete.

sit and watch then for an hour and make notes as to how often the scratch
how many scratchs at a time and where they are scratching

then wouk out how long they spend scratching as a percentage of the observation period

draw a daigram of the piggies body and mark on it areas of irritation

wourk out surface area by transferring the picture onto squared paper and estimate

so

estimated surface area being scratched as a percentage multipled by percentage of time scratching divided by 100

give you nothing but a headache

so ignore all of the above

however a less detailed study over 10 mins might give an idea
