First, a little back story: I have 2 piggies, both in separate cages because they didn’t get along when we had them meet almost 2 years ago.
All of the sudden at like 7pm on a normal day one of my piggies suddenly gets frightened. He was standing by his hut, he would sniff it, then slowly back away. He refused to go to the other half of his cage. He has always been skittish and hiding in his hut. But now, he has refused to go in his hut for a couple of hours. First, I was thinking it is the bright, colorful mats and somehow that was affecting him. This only happened once but I just found it way out of the ordinary. Maybe I shouldn’t worry because guinea pigs are prey animals and do get spooked. Anyone have an explanation or advice?

No explanation. It may have just been a noise or something else that spooked him. If he’s not going in his hide perhaps give him another. Put some hay near/inside it so he can munch under cover. And maybe consider covering part of his cage with a blanket or something. Hopefully with time he should be back to his normal self.
