For the last 2 days,Spice has started to eat and eat and eat!He now weighs nearly 700g,so has put on weight too.I haven"t had any pus out of the scar area either.....until he went to the vet today for another check up.
The vet made him scream,it was awful. He just squeezed the scar area really hard and lots of pus came out.I"m gutted I really thought that he was on the mend. The vet now wants to give him another injection of a powerful antibiotic(which he told me last time might kill Spice) and then said he may need another one after that.I"m not very happy about this and think its what stopped Spice eating last time. What would you do if it was your piggy?
Also wondered after reading Vedras book,if it is squeezed and then back flushed would this be enough to get on top of it.I feel that after about 3 months of antibiotics,on and off,an operation and being pulled around that his little body has had enough done to it.Can I buy this metronidazol, that Vedra recommends, from anywhere or is there something similar that I can buy?

Oh dear I dont know but wanted to say I am hoping for the best for Spice :-*

Yes, I always flush my abscesses! Thats the only way to deal with them in my opinion :) I flush with Hartmans solution and Baytril as well as giving Baytril orally at 0.4ml x2 daily. Ask your vet for a 10ml syringe, a blue Canula and the Hartmans and Baytril, (flushing with Baytril isn't necessary).

I don"t think my vet will sell me the Hartmans.I asked on friday if I could buy metronidazol and back flush it at home and they were horrified! Not once have they backflushed it....just keep on pumping him full of antibiotics.I read about Virkon on SPH supplies,do you think I could use that?It sounds good against bacteria.

I spoke to Vedra on friday. She said to backflush it with the metronidazol.I could borrow my mums car and take Spice back to the CCT but last time he stayed there for 3 weeks. In that time he went from being a little softie to a biter and lost a fair bit of weight....I think he was so stressed being away from home. Its the first time I got a piggy kiss when I went to pick him up.He snuggled into my neck and started licking me...It made me cry.

If he were mine I would get the stuff from Vedra and take Spice so she can lance and show you how to flush but bring him home, I don't believe in leaving piggies away from if possible :) Ask for a Canula, I prefer the blue ones but get a pink one too and see which one you get on best with- everyone's different :) You don't have to leave Spice there if you don't think its for the best, the only thing will be keeping the wound open.
Never tried Virkon for abscesses and don't think I would.

Yep ditto Karen O0

My vet has always flushed an abscess if at all possible, if it's where it can be done. Other than that he too has squeezed and yes they squeal but as he explained you need to get rid of the pus. If the abscess is in a hard to get area for flushing you can soak a pad makeup remover pad (this wont leave behind any fluff that could get into the wound) with the solution and firmly wipe the area 3 times a day, i had to do this for the one under Duke's chin, it took a little longer cause i couldn't flush but it DID work.
Good luck love, you're doing great for Spice :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: Paws crossed for you :)

After backflushing you could try packing the wound with High Potency Manuka Honey.
