Hi, I'm wondering if this is normal.

First I thought it was very strong smelling urine, when I picked Ruggles up, she had dark wetness around her bottom and she smelt. I wondered if she'd had diarrhea at first but now expect it is discharge from the surgery but I'm not sure how much they take away...is it just the ovaries or the uterus too? I can imagine if they remove the uterus there may be some bloody discharge out of her bottom. There's cream fleece in the cage and no sign blood or diarrhea in the cage.

Ruggles is otherwise fine. She has eaten very well since the surgery. I was concerned how she would be after a major sulk from having ear drops, a while back.

How long ago did she have her surgery?
all I can really suggest is having a vet check her over just in case she is having some problems

The surgery was yesterday. I've cleaned her up and will continue to keep an eye on her to see if there is more discharge. Thanks.

I've had 7 spayed and never had that happen, I personally would be concerned, are you in the uk? Post op appointments here are usually included in the cost of surgery in my experience so it might be worth seeing if the practice want to give her a once over, or may advise over the phone. Did she get painkillers? She may be feeling too rough to move out of her urine if not?

I hope shes feeling better soon bless her!

Poor girl.
Neither of the sows I had spayed had that problem.
A chat or visit with the vet would be a good idea.
Hope she recovers quickly

Hi

Please contact the clinic whether you should bring her in for a check. This is not a usual side effect we have come across.
I have had five sows spayed so far and never had any of this, nor have I come across this on the forum.

I would give the vet a quick call when I had Betsy spayed last year she never had this problem. Let us know what the vet says.

I've called the vets and I'm taking her in again tomorrow. They think it's simply that she's a bit dehydrated and she's been sitting in her urine, which does make sense as it is a strong urine smell, it's just darker than I would have expected. She is otherwise fine and not hot to the touch. I've had her on an incontinence pad and her urine has a slight colour to it but not blood. I've given her a small syringe of water...which she wasn't impressed by, she turned around so her backside was facing me.

Do you have any Pro-C that you can add to the water? You just need a small pinch in around 5ml of water. Mine won't take plain water from a syringe but love it with Pro-C added. If she is on antibiotics don't give it at the same time. Either an hour before or and hour after. If she isn't on antibiotics then she can have it anytime.

I did buy some when I went to the vets but haven't used it yet because dosage looked difficult so thanks for that, I'll try it.

Also, she is doing some really big soft poos and some normal ones but she is eating hay and vegetables normally. Maybe some more water will help that too, can't be easy getting those big ones out.
