Hi all,

So, I have a rose cottage 2 floor customised hutch for my 4 pigs outside.

I am looking at building them a run, but I'm fairly limited on floor space as I have a small yard.

Would it be acceptable to build the 'out door run' on top of the hutch ?.......Id make them a walk way up the side of the hutch with a tunnel leaving the side of the upper hutch section in a 'Z' zig zag shape to the roof of the hutch where it would be an open air section obviously caged.

What think ? Worth it ? more space for them to run around ? space saving ?

Making it isn't a problem, I have loads of wood and wire fencing and am pretty handy with DIY.

Thoughts ? :)

Personally I don't think the piggies would feel safe being that high above ground although that is just my opinion.

I guess if you could assure it would be sturdy and secure, it would be fine but you would need to provide them with shelters etc :)

Interesting, maybe make the 1st foot of it solid wood so they cannot see down? then upper half/roof wire fence so they can have plenty of air ?, Id also of course add a couple of boxes in there for them to scurry in to :)

That sounds ok although you would need to make sure that the hutch / run wasn't to heavy as you wouldn't want it falling over if you know what I mean.

Defo yeah, it just occoured to me that I can just bolt the hutch to the brick wall behind it, it wouldnt go anywhere then :)

My imagination got even more crazy when I thought about adding grass to the 'roof section' ...... by putting a strong plastic sheet on the roof to stop water leaking through then adding a layer of soil say, 10cm deep on the roof in the 'boxed in' section, and then letting a miniature lawn of grass grow on top, as long as I keep the nutrition level up the grass should grow and be healthy.

Give that a few months to grow then add the access run section to the side, the pigs can have there own mini lawn to play around on ?

In addition it would provide valuable insulation to the hutch, meaning it would have more protection in the winter.

Amazing idea or mad? lol
