Hi everyone! I’m wondering if anyone knows anything about whether or not soybean meal is bad for guinea pigs. Soybean meal is in a lot of pellet brands including some of the oxbow pellets, I’ve tried researching it and no conclusive answers come up. Thanks for reading!

i think someone asked before but there is not much info about it, i won't risk it personally

There is not much info about it but I wouldn't assume that it is majorly harmful to guinea pigs.

We recommend to limit any pellets to 1 tablespoon per piggy per day. Pellets are the one part of the diet that can be dropped if you would rather replace them with fresh and dry forage instead. Fresh veg and pellets basically replace the supplementary role to the fresh grass/hay that are the mainstay of the diet. Even no added calcium pellets still contain more calcium weight per weight than the veg highest in it (kale).

I agree, I went out and got new pellets that don’t contain soybean meal (oxbow adult guinea pig garden select) and will slowly transfer my piggies to that. My piggies diet is 2 heaping cups of organic veggies daily (I have two piggies and they get a different combo of organic veggies everyday), a little less than 1/8 cup of pellets, unlimited 2nd cut Timothy hay from small pet select, unlimited fresh water, 1 oxbow vitamin c tablet per pig per day, and occasional treats. About the amount of pellets- my vet and I discussed that due to the fact that my piggies are slightly chonky and with everything else they are getting, pellets aren’t completely “necessary”, so my vet suggested giving less pellets. I definitely think that if there is something we aren’t sure about giving to our piggies it’s always better to just avoid it altogether!
