Our group of 4 sows had to be separated a while back due to fungal infections. I delayed putting them back together because I was monitoring one of them whose fur seemed a little odd around her bottom but, having established all was fine, I reintroduced today on neutral ground indoors.

All went like a dream there, very peaceful, all 4 snuggling up together and all sharing food.

I totally cleaned the cage they'd been in as a group (2 have lived in there while they were separated into pairs) and rearranged what I could and added a new cardboard box hidey with 2 large entrance/exits.

They've been in there for about 5 hours now and all will be quiet for, say, 15 minutes at a time, but then suddenly they start running round like mad things. The top sow from when they were together before is clearly still top sow and whenever she goes anywhere, whichever pig is there shoots out to another location which seems to set off a chain reaction until they are all in new spots.

They never used to run round like this before and when they had a (shorter) separation once before (also a fungal outbreak), they didn't do this when they came back together.

There's no fighting, only the odd squeal of submission, no teeth chattering or rumble strutting but I'm a little worried that the most submissive ones (the two who have been separated from top sow for a while) are going to have their nerves shot to pieces by the time morning comes. Or, rather, my nerves are going to be shot to pieces if they keep going from all calm to this manic dashing all night long!

How are things today? Hopefully it was just re-establishing the pecking order among your ladies. I hope they have settled down again together now xx

They were at it all night long on and off - I think it was every time they met one another it was a huge surprise as they've been used to only one other piggy in the same space!

They all seem fine though and OH says they've been settled today (I've been out at work).

Thanks for asking

I worked at home today and there was still a little bit of manic running around but definitely nothing like as much as the first day and night and they are definitely not squabbling so that's great news. I got them all out together earlier on for a little photo shoot.

They're gorgeous. I'm sure it will completely settle soon. How old are they?

Thanks guys! Not sure exactly how old Nibbles and Red Lazer are (the two smooth haired ones) but I'd guess about 1 and a half years old. Red Laser is possibly a little bit older. The two teddies are 1 year old (the bigger one) and 13 months old (the smaller one - she is really a very petite piggy, so sweet!).

I asked because I wondered if hormones are still playing a part in their dominance. It could be that who-ever was not in charge feels ready to make a challenge after being away from the others. But it does sound like it will be short-lived :) Some of them are still growing up :)

Yes it was short lived. Maybe 48 hours tops in the end. I didn't particularly see anyone other than the original top pig make any attempt to dominate. The order between the other 3 is very hard to call to be honest although the petite teddy is the one who seems to end up sat out of the hides when they squeeze in and there's only room for 3 and in my head I would put her as the bottom pig but because of her size.

I really do think now, with the benefit of hindsight, that it was actually just the surprise element of turning round and finding another piggy what must have felt like everywhere they went!

It's great having them back together - I've been having endless fun being creative with their outdoor run putting it in lots of different combinations to give them a huge space to play - couldn't do that when they were split up as I needed to create separate run areas for (what was then) 4 pairs of piggies.
