I understand this can be a sign of dominance, but Butters has mounted Peanut at least five times in the last ten minutes. Everything will be quiet and calm in the cage, then suddenly Butters is rumblestrutting, Peanut is squeeing in distress, and then Butters is humping Peanut.

Soo... this is the first time I've ever seen this. Even the mounting behavior is new to me. This is normal, right? Even the sudden excessiveness of it?

She may well be in season - if it last's over 48 hrs it maybe a good idea to consult the vet as the sudden change in behaviour could be down to cyst's in the ovaries. If she settle's down within the next day or so it's more than likely that she is in season.

Sounds like shes in season, the sows used to do it all the time when they came into season. Now my neutered boar Ozzie has his way with them and they dont do it as often. The should settle down in a day or so.

x.

Agree with the above, mine have been doing it all morning! (I wonder in the change of season to autumn has an impact?) Just occasionally they seem to come into season and it really effects them.

I have also had one with cystic ovaries though and she almost made herself ill trying to hump everything in sight, she was literally panting with exhaustion, she just was going mad. I had to separate her in the end for 24 hours and she ended up having injections to shrink the cysts, so worth getting it checked out if it does'nt calm down.

I have also found that a neutered boar in the mix helps, he kind of tells them off and will disrupt any untoward behaviour, although I did have one try to hump him once......he did'nt take it too well and lets just say its not happened again! pow-pow

Sounds like she's in heat. This should only last a couple of days. Some sows show this more than others... one of my pigs was a whole different creature for a couple days every couple of weeks- she was a nervous little thing normally who became very dominant when in heat.

I actually ended up separating the two because I was worried Peanut was beginning to become stressed, and since I did that Butters has been normal, same with Peanut. Butters does have a benign mammary cyst, which the vet told us if we were to remove would be more of a cosmetic surgery due to the fact that it's harmless. I'll put them back together today and monitor the behavior... It sounds like Butters is just in season because she's been normal since we removed the other pig from her sight.
