So I've read time and time again that if two sows are mounting each other, it's about dominance, and is a way of socializing. But being a gal who is attracted to gals, it makes me think if that's always the case. Surely there's no way to ask a guinea pig, but homosexuality in animals is so under researched and under reported that it makes me wonder. The way I see it, it could be like two women hugging, or even kissing. Sometimes it's just socialization, greeting each other, comforting each other, etc etc, and sometimes it's romantic, between two women who are attracted to each other. Y'know? Idk, I'm just thinking out loud.

It's interesting, I just think basic animal instinct takes over them and they are born to understand there should always be one top dog in the herd.

However it's worth remembering content on the forum for our much younger members that are more of a personal nature it maybe deemed inappropriate. No offence intended naturally.

Same sex pairings happen in most species that pair up as couples for longer term or for life, but guinea pigs don't belong to that category; they are wired to live in groups and their mounting behaviour is very much determined by their group standing.

Who sows mount when in season depends on where in a hierarchy they are; it is usually the sow that is ranked just about or below and it changes as the hierarchy changes. While strong bonds can remain, in a sow's life who you interact with depends on who you ranked with.
Some boar bonds can mount each other casually from any direction to affirm their bonds, but again that is just bonding/dominance and not same sex attraction, as the same boars will equally happily live with sows if they have the chance.

I have piggies in groups and like them to develop a natural group behaviour and identity. Sadly for you - I have to say that I cannot report any incidences that would suggest that pairings like you envisage happen. True affection across the rankings is expressed by licking around the eye and by snuggling up together, not by mounting.
