13 ! Wow.. they will keep you busy ! Our Pippin is a funky punky one like the above picture...

Where is she coming from and is there any reason why you won't be going to collect her yourself? I ask this because how can you be sure that she is a sow and in good health if you don't go and collect her yourself and check her over.
Also, how can you be sure of her living conditions (ie that she isn't in with a male) - I mention this because you have been to collect a piggy before and found it to be wrongly sexed and pregnant. If you end up with more babies can you accommodate them all?
Finally are you assured of the courier's policy about carrying animals. How far will she be travelling and in what conditions? Are you sure that she will be well treated?

she is coming from a well known breeder about a hour and a hafe away I trust her. she will only used registered courier's. I'm using a well known animal courier who has been recommended to me.

reason as to why I'm not picking her up myself is because I don't drive and me any my partner will be getting our car just after Christmas. so have to rely on family for transport.

Please be aware that the forum doesn't recommend or endorse purchase from breeders as we are a pro rescue anti intentional breeding forum. There are many piggies in rescue or being surrendered who are in need of loving homes.

I hope all goes well for you and the little lady.

I have rescued a few one of who could have ended up with having her 3rd back to back pregnancy. luckily enough I got her and she wont be having anymore babies. and her babies will be staying with me so wont end up in rescues or going from home to home. :)

sorry for getting a pig from a breeder! maybe I don't belong on this forum? . :/

She looks so cute. 14 piggies though, not sure how you cope. Hope she settles in OK and the introductions with your others goes well

@*Meg* all members are welcome as long as they follow the rules of the forum. We are a pro rescue forum, and as I say we don't recommend or endorse the purchase of piggies from breeders or pet shops. However, we accept that members are free to shop or adopt as they wish. Many members have piggies acquired from shops or breeders. We do not discriminate. Our role is to educate, support and to promote the welfare of piggies through responsible pet ownership.

Don't be daft, I have got some piggies from a breeder a couple of times. There are no rescues here.

I bought soda-pop from a pet shop , I fell in love with her.Have bought a couple of lone girls as well from pet shops because they were scared. It doesn't matter where we get our furry babies from, just how much we care and love them.

I disagree - it does matter . If you buy a guinea pig from a pet shop, you are giving the pet shop a profit and , also, they will simply top up their stocks up again. Same with breeders .

I Agree with you both in some ways. thing is pet shops don't educate people enough when there getting guinea pigs for there kids.. I allways see kids got bored of them. breaks my heart. and I know what you mean because pet shops by them from a chain who breed and breed etc :(

I live where I'm not close to any rescues plus I don't drive. ive been looking on preloved etc but theres no sows for rehoming I was lucky to get the ones I did rescue.

What's preloved

Preloved is a free ads site. Please don't start a discussion about animals on free ad sites !

If you can get rescued piggies great, but what if there are no rescue places around.
Mind you I do have my eye on one that's in a pet shop adopt centre. In such a tiny cage & he/she is a big piggy, poor little love.

In an ideal world yes I would rather rescue and would always advise people to rescue but I don't think people should be made to feel bad if they get their pigs from a different source. At the end of the day we are part of this forum for the good of the pigs welfare.

I understand the site being pro-rescue but it is also about providing a good life for an animal, regardless where it came from. I hope this thread doesn't put people off and feel like they don't belong on the forum. Surely the pet shop piggies deserve a good home too? I would have rather got some rescue piggies but was not allowed on the basis of 0.7 sq m. I am going to try and adopt from support for adoption at pets at home but I know wherever I get them from they will have the best possible life I can provide them.

Please see my post #8 above.

I don't understand?

Picking Up A Cuy Guinea Pig

i feel sad but I have decided not to get them the reasons being time, space and them bonding with my other 7 and tbh space I don't think it fair to have 9 in a shed I would much rather save up for a bigger shed then them fighting for space. and also the cost side of things I don't want to get them then me decided I cant afford them then selling them and then them keep going from different homes wouldent be fair. and as the above poster said they need more experienced cavy people. also me and my partner are planning for our second child and don't want/shouldn't take on anymore piggies. I just hope they find lovely owners x just hope I'm doing the right thing

a few things have changed since that post. I'm now getting a 10x6 shed me and my partner have decided not to try for baby no2. I now also get my hay by the bale witch is cheaper then buying bags of hay.

anyway so what if ive changed my mind ? I can pay for all my piggies.. they eat well and have there veggies everyday. I also shop at lidl and aldi witch makes bying veg cheeper also getting them at 7-8 at supermarkets when they get reduced.

How do I deactivate/Delete my profile?

I have just logged on this morning.

@*Meg* you are more than welcome to remain as a forum member irrespective of where your piggies have come from. You will appreciate that many members have piggies adopted from rescues, but equally many have taken piggies from shops, breeders and free ads sites. All are welcome as long as they follow the forum rules.

The reason for my initial enquiry was that we have seen evidence on this forum that sometimes breeders use the opportunity when a courier is involved (and the purchaser isn't present to check over the piggies) to send piggies who have been wrongly sexed, or who have wounds, injuries and untreated infections to unsuspecting new homes. There are threads on this forum with piggies from breeders where there are broken limbs, mites, mange, fungal infection and bites among other ailments. Sometimes piggies are also transported in less than ideal transport arrangements causing them further stress.

You responded that you are satisfied both with the breeder and with the transport arrangements and its's not for me or the forum to go beyond that. However, as a staff member it is my responsibility to enforce forum rules and to promote the forum's ethos.

The forum is openly stated to be anti intentional breeding and pro rescue. For this reason, as I said in my post we do not recommend or endorse the purchase of piggies from breeders or pet shops. However, we accept that members are free to shop or adopt as they see fit. We do not discriminate. Our role is to educate, support and to promote the welfare of piggies through responsible pet ownership. We support members with their piggies irrespective of where those piggies originated from. If you look at other threads you will see that support in action.

Healthy debate about whether to adopt or shop is to be expected and welcomed. This is a public forum and there will be differences of opinion. However all discussion should, in accordance with the forum's rules (link here Terms of Service And Forum Rules) be courteous and polite. If you feel that any member has breached the rules please feel free to use the report button at the bottom of every post.

I do hope that you will continue to remain as a valued member of the forum.

I apologise if my replies are somewhat abrupt, and my intention is not to offend, or upset the OP.

However, I am concerned about veterinary care . . . Affording housing, bedding, and feed etc, for multiple guinea pigs is one thing, affording veterinary care for multiple guinea pigs is another - I have to question whether the OP has considered how they will afford veterinary care and, indeed, how they will transport their guinea pigs to, and from their veterinary practice?

It would be extremely naïve to think there will be no need for veterinary care . . . Even with the best of care, things can - and do - go wrong.

I do hope that my concerns are unfounded.

You're absolutely right !

My concern with this thread was that I didn't want this poster to feel she was being singled out .

The reminders that this forum is a pro rescue forum, and does not recommend or endorse the purchase of piggies from breeders or pet shops is a reminder for everybody.

I also agree with you about the additional costs of looking after large numbers of guinea pigs . For me, it's the time element too - the number of times I have had to take short notice annual leave from work - fortunately, I have a very understanding employer .

Reading through this thread I think that if Meg says she can provide for them, then she can! If she says that the person is good and recommended to pig up her pig, then I'm sure they are! She's said she gets food cheap, hay cheap in big bales AND that they will be living in a huge shed.
I do sometimes feel (even though this isn't intentional) that people are slightly put down or feel like bad piggy owners if they do not adopt from a rescue. Saying my piggies live in a pet shop cage all I have received is comments saying it's not good enough. They free range now.
Respect

Totally agree. If she says she can afford vet bills etc then it's not for anyone to question how she can afford it, her financial situation is no one's business.

I really hope this hasn't put you off the forum, @*Meg*
