I introduced a 8 week old baby girl guinea to my 5 year old sow this today. My 5 year old sow had previously lived with her sister until her sisters death 2 weeks ago. The 5 year old keeps trying to mount the baby and is chasing her around the hutch. There doesn't seem to be any aggresion but I'm worried she will hurst or distress the baby. She would occasionally mount and chase her sister but as they were both the same age/size this didn't really concern me. They're were never any injuries.

Has anybody else experienced this? She has calmed down a little but has not completely stopped cahsing / mounting her. They have been together now for about 3 1/2 hours. the last thing I want is for my new baby to be hurt :(

Sounds like the older one is trying to show her dominance, which would be normal. Can you put something in the cage that is big enough for the baby to hide in but too small for the older sow to get to her if it all gets a bit much?

Guinea babies are pretty sturdy lil creatures. I'd keep a close eye on them so the baby doesn't get too distressed.

It could also be the older sow is coming into season, or as azura said, it could be a dominance thing.

Omg! Though that said sow mounting HAMSTER! Obviously too early for me still!
My friend watched my guineas last week while I was away - she has a hamster and had popped him in his ball as she was cleaning his cage - he rolled up to my 2 boys in their cage, which was on the floor and took the fright of his life - apparently he didn't come out again for 2 days until they came home.
Wonder what the wee man thought - 'GIANTS!'

Thanks for all your replies. I'm hoping she's in season and it'll all cool down in the next few days! The baby (name is pending!) keeps going back to sit by her and doesn't seem too alarmed. The older guinea pig keeps grooming her face and ears. Is that affection or a sign of dominance?

MaxandChip most of my friends get very confused over whether I have guinea pigs or hamsters? Very strange, especially given the size difference :{

That is affection; your older girl is mothering her new little friend who is obviously adoring her!

Its either dominance or the older sow is in season, sometimes sows purr and mount when they are in season
