I have been taking the piggies out for individual lap time and they are both getting use to sitting there while I stroke and talk to them.

They both seem to chat to themselves during this (a bit like the sounds they make when they're eating), I assume this is a good sound?

Also, when I put the girls back, as soon as they see the cage they seem to go mad and riggle almost to the point of wanting to jump out of my hands. Why are they doing this and should I be worried?

Thanks again for your help

The sound your descibing sounds like a gentle teeth grind. Mine sometimes do it. I'm not sure the reason for them doing it is.

As for trying to jump out of your hands before putting them down, mine do it too. I think its completly normal. Mine do it, no matter how tame they are. I tend to try and keep them firmly in my hands until close to the ground. Ive had one do it before who managed to jump out early and cause himself to go lame temporarily for a bit so be careful.

My two girls also can't wait to get back to the cage and aren't too crazy about the actual catching process. Rather than chasing them around their cage (I want the cage to be their safe place) I use a transfer box to get them from the cage to the piggy play area where we socialize and they eat their evening greens on my lap. Up to this point they have made all their own choices, running to the transfer box, climbing up onto my knee. After piggy play time and they are ready to go back to their cage I tell them "Back to your cage". They are pretty smart and want to go back so bad they sit still for me to pick them up. On those few dreaded nail clipping days I tell them "Do nails" and they aren't quite so receptive to being picked up. I tried the transfer box to bring them to cuddle and other times and if it something they don't like they will refuse to run into it the next time. I can't believe how clever these guinea pigs are.

Chutting (which sounds like they're talking to themselves) is the sound of a content piggy. They'll do this when they're comfortable, eating, wlaking around etc.

That doesn't mean that they don't want to go back. Even a piggy who is purrrring like crazy during lap time will still get excited about going home or going for a run around so I wouldn't take it personally or be worried at all :)

Delaine, that's very interesting. We have a huge cage, so picking the piggies up without chasing them round for ages is a real problem. What does your transfer box look like?

Thanks!
