Hi I was clipping my 1 year old male Guinea pigs nails today and noticed that he had something that looked like poo stuck on his paw I really thought that it was just poo and tugged a little on it to make sure that it wouldn’t hurt him when I pulled it off and he didn’t react so I figured he wasn’t in pain. I noticed he had it on both of his feet and figured I would try and get it off with some warm water. He really doesn’t like water so that immediately didn’t work so I decided to just pull it off, as soon as I pulled it off he started dripping blood and I started to freak out, he didn’t show that he was in any pain but there was definitely quite a bit of blood. I grabbed a cloth and dipped it in the water and held it tightly in his paw, after a few minutes his bleeding slowed down and he started walking around as if nothing had happened. I did some research and found out they could be spurs, I don’t have the money to take him to the vet right now does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do and if he will be okay. I was very worried and cried while he sat in my lap I thought I had just pulled a finger nail off or something! Please say this isn’t as big as a problem as I’m thinking it is and that I’m over reacting I really don’t want him to be in any pain or anything.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Spurs are usually harmless and do not need removing unless they become a problem and catch on bedding etc. A vet would need to deal with such an issue as they can be painful if caught.

If it has left an open wound, then there is an infection risk. You can clean the wound with saline solution for now but you should see a vet to make sure any wound heals properly

Thank you, I just checked on him it’s the next morning and he seems to be doing fine but I got him to sit in some water to hopefully clean out the wound a bit more but I’ll definitely take him to the vet as soon as possible.
