This has happened before...not this bad though!

My 3-ish year old Sugar has been struggling with something in her mouth for close to 2 hours. Right after her morning pellets, she started making those motions like something was stuck. You could hear sounds from her tongue. That went on maybe 10 minutes.

Gave her some cucumber figuring the water might help. Ate it all but took a long time.

Now I'm watching her have trouble with hay.

This happend a month ago and I saw her "make faces" on and off for a few days (and had her booked in, took a week to get in). Anyway, by the time the appointment came, it stopped and the vet didn't see anything.

She's searching for the perfect piece of hay and can't seem to find a good one :(

The vet opens in an hour but there's a good chance the vet won't be in today or available for a while.

Any advice?

I would definitely try and get her seen by the vet especially if she is unable to eat hay. It could be a dental issue brewing. In the meantime, weigh her daily to see whether she is losing weight and if she is, you may need to step in and syringe feed her

I am tagging @furryfriends (TEAS) to offer more advise

It could be an abscess. My pig, Maui, has a molar abscess. We found out at the vet yesterday. I would start with a syringe and make a little pellet soup. Sending love.❤ Also, has she been loosing weight? I found out by when I picked her up, and she felt VERY light. I weighed her and she was 300 grams underweight! I almost fainted... I would weigh her just to be safe.

I'm afraid she does have a dental issue, or something like a hay poke inside her mouth that could turn into an abscess :(

Last time the vet mentioned possibly checking her mouth under light sedation if it happened again.

We had a piggie with regular dental trims needed and eventually a bad abscess.

I hope your piggie is on the mend soon! What kind of treatment is going to be necessary?

Right now, she is on pain meds, one to make the abscess leave, and critical care to help her gain weight. All must be fed with a syringe, and she hates them all lol. But the vet also said, that if this doesn't work, she may need x-rays of her molars and perhaps surgery. I've heard x-rays can cost a lot, so I don't know what to do😥 I will pray for Sugar and please keep Maui in your prayers❤

Well by some miracle, the vet has a 2:00 appointment today. Going to have to figure out how to get to it since I work till 2:30 and have to pick my daughter up at school at 3....hopefully grandparents and work at home husband can step in. I'll probably tell work I need to leave early.
I hope you can get her to the vet today

Good luck at the vet! I hope you can get it easily sorted out.

Update:

A few hours before the appointment, I tried giving her some filtered water with a syringe. It may have dislodged something because she started eating normally again.

So I called the vet's office, and they were ok with me watching her a few hours and possibly cancelling. While I was at work, my husband gave her some pepper and fresh hay and watched her for 15 minutes and she was still eating normally.

Called the vet back and the doctor actually got on the phone 🥰 And she was ok with me watching her.

She wants me to keep track of how often this has been happening and get a video. It has been about a month since the first time.

So if it returns, resolves like today, but then starts happening at shorter intervals, we may go right to a dental trim.

🐷💖

Do you have a thread for Maui? I'll be thinking of you guys 🐷💖 I had a piggie who had surgery for an abscess and she lost one of the smallest molars with it. She recovered! Hope Maui's clears up with the meds. It's awful when they hate the syringe.

I do have one called molars but none is ever in it. But I'm glad your pig is feeling better and I hope the same thing happens with Maui💖

Glad to hear things are better for now. I'm sure you'll keep a close eye on her. Fingers crossed she continues to do well.
