can a piggie sound a little bunged up without being fully ‘congested’? just been sat next to della munching away at her hay and could hear her sounding slightly congested (nothing like the last time) for about 3 minutes then the noises stopped? just wondering if these noises always mean congestion straight away or if it could have just been something in her airways that has now come out.. will obviously be keeping my eye (and ears!) on her but didn’t know wether to offer some metacam now or to wait and see if it comes back?

Hi

Guinea pig airways are very small and narrow so even the smallest obstruction can sound quite alarming. It should pass in a few hours at the most or often after a nose clearing good old sneeze.

See a vet when you hear any clear strong rasping or crackling in the upper airways (URI) or any klicking in the lungs (can indicate pneumonia).

hiya, thanks for the quick reply!
that’s brilliant thanks so much for the reassurance, della has been treated for congestion in the past hence why i know what to look out for but like i said this was nothing like the last time! just thought id post to be on the safe side.

oh i definitely would straight away if it was something like that!

we have been told if she gets congested again to give metacam for a few days and if it doesn’t clear to book in to see vet last time we went for this problem, so i will always be seeing a vet either way if it carrys on / gets worse, just tgpf is my first port of call (especially on a sunday haha!)
