My guinea pig charlie is suffering from systemic fungal infection, he really is quite poorly and he has started open mouth breathing like gasping. what does this mean?!

Is he eating / drinking ok?

Is he on his feet?

I'm sorry he's so poorly. If you try and give us more info we'll try and help, and Laura-CCC4 is online now and very knowledgeable

Oh the poor thing, one of my pigs did this and i lost him unfortunately but he had been very ill, had pneumonia then an underlying heart problem came about and one morning he just started gasping for breath and the vet advised me to have him pts :0, but it was so horrible to see him like that

A trip to the vets sounds called for - a diurectic such as frusimide (sp) may be of benefit to help clear the lungs of fluid. Best of luck and my fingers are crossed for you.

I'm afraid if he is laying down and gasping and looking very poorly then he may be very ill indeed. If he starts pawing / running with his legs then this is what guinea pigs (and other animals I believe) do as they start to pass away. I don't want to say that this is definitely what is happening with your piggy, as of course it's impossible to tell without seeing him, but I also want you to be prepared in case it is.

I agree it's best to ring the vet and see if they can see him urgently.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Thank you all so much for your advice, I work in a vets so I took him with me today and we put him in an oxygen tent and give him stuff to drain fluid off his chest. He went a little better but I guess I caught his illness too late :( he died while I was stroking him. I tried my hardest with him, such a lovely guinea pig and always wanted to be held. I love you Charlie pig :( xxxxx
