Hey everyone, my partner's guniea pig is getting some redness around the eye. We love this guniea pig to death but want to avoid the vet if possible due to money problems. She's still acting normal and eating but we're still concerned about her. Is this anything to be alarmed of?

Hi, unfortunately with eyes it can go down hill fast...the vet is a best course of action...as it could anything from a hay poke, scratch or ulcerative...or it could be an allergy but you won't know until a vet looks at it...their eyes are very fragile and from experience after one piggy had a hay poke she was on eye drops for 2 weeks if it had been left any longer she could have lost the eye even though she was seen as the cut to her eye was quite substantial from the hay and its removal...I understand money issues are a factor maybe speaking to a vet prior on the phone or having a quick shop around to see if there are any exotic vets at a cheaper price...or some can offer payment plans (depending on where you live) but you'd have to ring first to ask about if they do...

Eyes are considered urgent and always require a vet. Dealing with the issue promptly can avoid expensive problems down there line.
I assume the other eye isn’t looking like this one?

You do not need an exotic vet though. Eyes are the same species to species so a general vet will be able to help

Good luck. I agree it’s best to nip things in the bud before they get worse and more expensive
