I have some concerns on whether Pedro is just short sighted or has general eyesight problems, he was rescued from a hoarder's hoard of 200+ guinea pigs, so I was prepared for potential issues. I have read contrasing information on red eyed piggies having less cones than darker eyed pigs causing fuzzier vision, whilst other sources say they see just as well as any other guinea pig.

He spooks easier than Percy, who has darker eyes, but that could just be Pedro's nature. Pedro tilts his head to the side as if trying to get a closer look at things when eating his pellets or when investigating new objects, and sometimes has a bit of a delay when offered a treat, though not always. I see no signs of injury or cataracts as both red eyes look to be clear in health inspection and via lamp reflection camera test seen below.

I might just be a worrywort over something trivial, but I'd like your input too. 😆

If you’re worried there’s no harm in having Pedro’s eyes checked out. The bonus about eyes is that they can be checked by any vet, not just an exotics. Guinea pigs are short sighted so it may be nothing and they’re all normal I don’t know about having a different size lens depending on the eye colour.

He still gets on fine with getting around and everything like Percy, so I could just be worrying too much. 😆 It is just some observations I noted that made me a tad concerned.

Still probably best to get his eyes checked at some point though, just unsure if the vets around here are still doing emergencies only still or not.

Always worth a routine vet check but piggies dont have the best vision anyway and dont rely on visual cues much so all a vet can probably say is reassure you that the eyes are not damaged. Many red eyed piggies see perfectly well but inbred breeder piggies from dodgy backgrounds may have all kinds of health things going on, our lovely Blodwen is partially sighted I think, she has pink eyes that are rather small and squinty and she came from an awful breeder... who was trying to breed long haired lilac piggies who look like your Pedro actually so possibly they are related! Blod sometimes fails to find food right by her face if it doesnt smell strongly, and she spooks easily and also runs the wrong way then looks a bit bewildered like "where did everybody go?" if she isnt stood right next to another piggy.
But many partially sighted and even completely blind piggies do fine with good piggy friends to help them out, as long as you dont move the furniture too often and make sure their dinner either smells really good or turns up in a predictable place :)

They could possibly be related. =o Though Pedro is usually the first to the food bowl, followed by Percy. XP Must be the sound of the rustling bag! I have also guided him with a lettuce leaf to where the veggies are put if he isn't already there, with his nose in the air sniffing like a mad thing. 😆 He is also the most vocal of the two, squeaking and complaining if Percy is too far away from him, even if it looks like he should still be in his line of sight and it appears that Percy can see him completely fine.

With that Pedro came from a 200+ hoard that were breeding out of control, he most likely is inbred to some degree, and it'd be incredibly impressive if he wasn't. I am gonna work on getting him checked by a vet to see if he possibly could have other issues given his past.

I think a good piggy slave like you is attuned to their piggies so you know there’s something that’s not quite right.
A vet check would certainly reassure you.

Merab was completely blind for the last years of her life and it never caused her any problems.
I’m also certain that Micah may be blind in his left eye. He has a congenital abnormality in his eyes anyway. Doesn’t stop him being an enthusiastic husboar.

Hope Pedro is ok
