hello, I have 2 guinea pigs, both sisters aged 14 weeks. firstly they appear to have days and night mixed up, they are asleep most of the day and wake around 8 pm and seam to be awake for quite a while, I have 2 children and they would love to watch them playing in their cage etc. Also I wondered what is best to line the cage with I currently use newspaper, however when I go to spot clean each day it seams quite wet and brakes up easily. Both my partner and I are blind, and although we are very capable, this is a bit of a pain. hoping for any helps.

Bedding

Put down a layer of newspaper then put down bedding (not pine) then put down hay to graz on it also helps keep their teeth short:)

Hope it helped:)

At 14 weeks they'll still be very shy at being around you - give them time and they'll soon start to adjust more to family life and be awake/come out to see you during the day, especially when food is involved. ;)
In terms of bedding, there are loads of things that you can use - maybe fleece might be a good option for you? Or, as already suggested, wood shavings and hay on top of the newspaper? :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. it is natural for guinea pigs to come out when it is quiet as they feel safer. I do not like shavings as they are very messy and many piggies are allergic to them. I use towels with two layers of fleece. I find this a nice bedding for piggies. If you wish to use fleece you can buy it cheaply from Primark and supermarkets. You have to wash and dry it three times without fabric conditioner to make it wick away water.

Hi I read that guinea pigs tend to be more lively in the evening and in the day they rest, mine are the same.

In regards to bedding, I put down about 5 layers of newspaper, then some sawdust and hay

Hope this helps

Hiya - our boars are the same age as your sows! 14 weeks! We have got them in a c and c cage with a hayloft. The hayloft is quite new so I am still experimenting in there - at the moment I have got about a bale of hay (slight exaggeration maybe!) on top of carefresh. I just cleaned it out fully for the first time today and put all new hay - the piggies were SO excited they couldn't stop popcorning!

On the bottom I only have one layer of fleece on top of Huggies bed mats. I just tried puppy pads from poundstretcher for the first time today after seeing so many members use them - but for my size of cage the bed mats are better. It is 5 foot by 2 foot downstairs and 2 bed mats neatly cover it - atm I have 3 puppy pads down but they aren't wide enough.

When the cage was single story, I used the shake the poo off every day - now it has got the hay loft I am brushing what I can reach with a dustpan and brush ever day and then cleaning properly and changing the fleece twice a week.

With regard to keeping them awake - there is no peace in our house especially at the moment as it is school holidays. They are in and out of the cage all day long! We just lift them if they are asleep - they soon re-settle on a knee!

One of the things our pigs love most and has made them really active is a long corrugated tube - they love chasing each other in that and we also have lots of other bits and bobs - it is like an adventure playground! My son is often re-arranging everything so that keeps them very interested and lively.

Both our piggies are Rex and I believe this breed is particularly docile and good for a 'lap pet' so they do seem to love coming out and are very docile.

You can also try putting some herbs (ours LOVE parsley) in some paper bags and have fun watching them get the herbs out.

You can get some cage accesories off amazon - they seem to have a good range
