Hi, I am new to the forum and after some advice please.

My daughter has been asking for Guinea Pigs for ages and I finally gave in 2 weeks ago. (Not without looking into it first and understanding all that was involved though) She is over the moon and loves them to bits.

We have a large 5ft 2 story hutch in the garden. When it came to getting the Guinea Pigs though, nowhere had any except one pet shop, so we ended up with 2 boys. We were going to get girls so this is all I researced, but of course the pet shop told me that 2 boys together is also fine. Had already decided on 2 as thought this was kinder.

1 is 11 weeks and 1 is 9 weeks. Apparantly they came from the same breeder. They were terrified for about the first week to we had not handled them, just stroked them and on Friday I noticed the smaller one had a large sore under his neck. The vet has given us hibbyscrub to bathe it twice a day. I have not seen any signs of fighting but seperated them on the vets advice. Yesterday and Tuesday we put them both together in the run for a few hours and kept checking for any signs of fighting and put them seperately at night. They seemed pleased to see each other and were both eating the grass and popcorning. Last night the smaller one has another sore next to the big sore that does appear to look like a bite.

Do you think they should be seperate and will they be able to be put back together later when the smaller one is better?

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear your boys seem to be scrapping - were they in the same pen when you saw them in the petshop?

Usually young pigs / litter mates are ok with each other but once they start to get to be 'teenagers' the hormones kick in and there can be scraps. Unfortunately if they have inflicted wounds it will be more difficult to settle them back down together.

Have a read of this:

You could try bathing them and reintroducing them. A common problem with boars is them not having enough space but it sounds like yours have got plenty. You could try putting 2 of everything - bowls, etc. so they are not fighting over resources.

Putting them together in the run then splitting them again isn't really a good idea as they will go through the same dominance rituals each time they meet - so the chances of fights are higher.

I hope they can sort it out. They are quite young to be fighting.
