Hi, i took one of my guinea pigs to the vets as he was having soft poos, the vets gave me an antibiotic for 3 days to try and restore his poos back to how they should be, at this point they were only on hay, they firmed up how they shouldve and took the vets advice to keep them on just hay for a few days after we stopped the antibiotic. We have just started him back on very few nuggets this week and his poos have gone back to being soft again. Do you think the nuggets could be causing this, theyre burgess excel with mint. Any advice on this would be great on what nuggets could be better for him or if its worth even giving him nuggets at all.

When a piggy has soft poops its caused by a digestive imbalance. When this occurs, you stop giving veg and instead only feed them hay and the normal limited amount of pellets.
Being put on antibiotics can also cause the soft poops - the antibiotics kill the good gut bacteria as well as the illness causing bacteria. Again, feeding hay and pellets and stopping veg is the course of action.
In both situations, you can give a probiotic alongside the course of antibiotics to help settle the tummy or give poop soup (made from the poops of a healthy companion).
I would think it unlikely the nuggets are causing this but if you would rather not feed them at present, then that is fine. They are the least important part of the diet so not having pellets isnt an issue. Always ensure he is eating enough hay to maintain his weight.
Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

Hi thanks for the reply, I'm going to take him off nuggets again and then he’ll only be having hay see if they improve again, he has been off veg for 2 weeks now so the veg cant be causing the poos, would you say if the poos dont improve try giving him some poop soup to see if that help?

I would definitely be using poop soup - it helps to directly replace the gut bacteria. You need to use very fresh poops. Put his healthy companion into a carrier or box with some snacks and wait. As soon as poops are produced, pop them in a little dish of water and soak them for a couple of minutes, then syringe the water to your poorly boy. This needs to be done within five minutes of the poops being produced to be most effective (the gut bacteria will start dying off and then wont be as effective). If being off veg and the poop soup isnt helping, then please do go back to the vet

Thanks for that i will try that if it doesnt improve. When i saw the vet he said not to come back as long as he looks healthy, active and still eating as he always has even if his poos are still soft. The vet just said theres not much else they can do and to try and persist with it hoping it gets better.
