hello everyone :)

I've just adopted a male piggy from the RSPCA, who was in a pretty poor condition when they rescued him. I've just picked him up from the place where he was being fostered and brought him home.

He's been thourougly checked out by an exotic vet and has been neutered while at the RSPCA.

He appears to have diarrhoea / very soft poos. He's also really dirty and smells... poor lad :(

So... my questions are - what do I do about the soft poos and should I bathe him or let him settle in first?

Could it be down to having new foods since he was rescued? I imagine he didn't get much fresh veg in his previous home...

(Also, I have 4 female pigs who he will be joining eventually)

Thanks!

I would speak to the foster home and see if this is an ongoing issue? Which branch of the RSPCA was it?

How long have they had this boy for?

Is it diarrhea or sloppy poo also? Diarrhea is an emergency and needs vet treatment. Wet poo can be caused by a number of factors

I've just emailed them and asked whether he has any health issues I should know about. Haven't heard back yet.

I believe they've had him since November. Long enough for him to be safe to go with females after his neuter.

If you look for my threads further down the page I have an elderly pig who has had diarrhoea - @Wiebke has given some great advice in the oldest post and some others gave good advice later when we struggled to stop it. It can be a long haul. The first thing to do is to take him off veggies until 48 hours after his poop returns to normal. If that doesn't work you can try probiotics too (I like fibreplex, but there is also bio lapis and I am just about to try Pro C which gets great reviews).

If as a first line these don't work then we can let you know some other things to try.

Thank you. I'll read the posts now.

Ok, I've read through the posts. He has had some veggies on the ride home but I will stop them from now on and see how he does. I have some probiotics that I can give him.

He's such a friendly, happy boy. Really hope we can get this sorted quickly so he can meet his future girlfriends soon :)

Awww poor lad. It could be stress from the journey. What veggies did he have?

Give him lots of hay to hopefully get the fibre in him

I just got him home a few hours ago. He had some romaine lettuce and a bit of red pepper.

Hay it is then! Should I give him any pellets? We have burgess excel.

Yes, pellets fine to give. Maybe lettuce upset him a little and stress of journey perhaps?

this thread is the starting point.

Yes give pellets - especially as the burgess has probiotics in. We only stopped pellets as we couldn't stop the runny bottom with the first line of attack (which is remove veg give probiotics).

Thank you. I'll go back and read them through again. I skimmed through for the instructions on what to do but I'll go back and read them thoroughly.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should bath him? I was thinking I'd wait a few days. Hopefully he'll be better then and will only have to go through it once.

He's munching away on his hay now :) can't believe how friendly he is. Love him already!

Personally I would make sure he is settled (so perhaps not today) and put a small amount of water in a sink (only enough to get his feet wet) and butt bath then blow dry him. The thing I have found with Biscuit is that it is easier to see if it is resolving when she has a clean butt.

Agreed. Thank you! :)

What a beautiful little chap. Hopefully just the stress of the journey plus perhaps some watery veg have upset his tummy.

With luck after a diet of hay and pellets for a couple of days he will be right as rain. He looks a really friendly chap.

Thank you. He really is super friendly and sweet. Hopefully he will be even more so when he's well and truly settled :) He's definitely grumpy about not having veggies though. I get little teeth chatters when I offer him more hay or pellets :P

He's a bit better already. Poos are mostly properly formed, just a little soft. Fingers crossed.

Thank you all x
