Hi guys,

I noticed Poppy has some soft poops :(. She was out on the grass yesterday and running around and popcorn and this morning she just seemed a bit more down. Still eating and moving about.

I then I noticed she’s got quite soft poops (and I attached a picture, sorry!)

I’m going to keep her off fresh veggies for a couple of days, hopefully they’ll improve and if they don’t I’ll phone the vets?

Does that sound okay or is there something else I should be doing?

Thank you :)

Yes - please do remove veg and grass from her diet, feeding only hay, for the time being to allow for her system to settle. Do see a vet if things dont improve after a few days. When you do reintroduce veg, do so slowly, starting with herbs is often best as they tend to be milder on the tummy.

Do also switch to daily weight checks just to be sure she is feeling well enough to continue eating plenty of hay.

Please ensure when you reintroduce grass to the diet, that it is done slowly, limiting the amount of time spent on grass for the first few weeks of the spring; or picking handfuls of grass for the first few weeks of the season to adjust their tummies to it before putting them on grass for a limited amount of time for the first time.
Do make sure it is also not damp and that it is warm enough to be on grass (ie 15 degrees) - it is still rather chilly underfoot and not really advised for them to be put on grass this early in the year. The guide is that you need to be able to stand on grass with bare feet and only wearing a t-shirt without feeling damp or cold underfoot before it is warm enough for piggies to be put back on grass.

Also she seems to be crouching back and eating her poops quite a lot, I’m just worried that it’s diarrhoea?

Hi

Please do not put your piggies out on the lawn without due preparation. After a break their gut microbiome will not be prepared for it (diarrhea and bloating can both result from this) and the ground is still very cold (a little sunshine doesn't go all that far yet!, which can trigger a urinary tract infections.

Here are our very practical tips to ensure a safe and joyful experience for both your piggies and you:

:agr: maybe add some probiotics to help with her gut micro-biome. Hopefully it will right itself soon.

Thank you everyone :)

Poppy’s just done a few much more normal looking poos so hoping that she gets better now 🤞

She’s been off fresh veg for 42 hours now, should I start slowly reintroducing it or should I wait another day just to be sure?

Thank you :)

Honestly it's up to you. How long have they been normal for? If you do choose to start reintroducing veg, try herbs, like coriander, first as they're a lot milder and better tolerated.

it’s advised to keep them off veg for 24 hours after they have normalised, just to be sure, and then to slowly start reintroduction starting with herbs is advised

They’ve only been normal for today, so I’ll probably leave it for another 24 hours :)

Poppy will definitely be happy with the coriander! hey
