My 3 year old piggie has been having soft stools for the past 1 day. I’m really worried as to what my next step should be. I have supplemented him with vitamin C. He does not seem to be dehydrated or lethargic, but is overall less active than normal. He does not seem to be eating a lot of hay, even though I’ve been trying to get him to eat dry timothy hay. I would really appreciate some help. Thank you. :)

I’m sorry to hear he isn’t well.

You must stop giving him any fresh veg or grass while his poops are not formed. Any fresh veg on an unbalanced and upset tummy will make things worse. Veg can only be reintroduced (and slowly reintroduced) 24 hours after his poops normalise.
Then, switch from the routine weekly weight checks to instead doing daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor his food intake. If he isn’t eating enough hay then his weight will be dropping, and when they aren’t eating enough hay you need to step in and syringe feed a fibre rich recovery feed or mush his normal pellets with water ad syringe the mixture to him. These steps will replace fibre they aren’t eating for themselves and keep the gut functioning. The daily weight checks mean you can gauge how much syringe feed to give to keep his weight stable. I’ll add some guides in below which will help on how.

Do have him seen by a vet To find out what is causing his symptoms.

Hello,

Sorry to hear your piggy is having trouble.

The first thing to do would to be to remove all veggies, for at least 48 hours. If that clears it up, you can reintroduce veggies very slowly. Sometimes it's a case of trial and error if ther is a particular veg setting off his tummy troubles. A couple of my boys can't have coriander or lettuce for example.

You do need to switch to weighing him daily as any losses will need to be investigated.

If he is eating lots of good quality hay, you shouldn't need to supplement vitamin C. Sometimes too much vitamin C can have more of a detrimental affect on health.

If you are at all concerned, if there is any weight loss or issues continued he will need to see a vet. There is no harm in a quick check up to put your mind at ease either way.

Hope things improve soon 🤞
