Hi, just wanting some advice please if anyone has had any experience of something like this,
My guinea pig (roughly 4 and a half years old) has had abnormal poos the last couple of days as they’re quite soft and not usual shape. He seems fine in himself , he’s eating and drinking normally and chirping when I cuddle with him. His diet has not been changed. He has just started going out in the garden again now for a couple of hours a day when the weather is better but he hasn’t been out for 2/3 days so not sure the grass would be having an effect still. I will phone the vet if this doesn’t improve in the next day or two, but just wondered if you guys think it’s a good idea to take him off veg for 24 hours and see how he gets on? I feel bad as he squeaks so much for his food usually but it may be worth it if it’ll help him. Any other advice would be really appreciated please :) also just a side note, we did take him to the vet around a month or two ago as we noticed he was drinking a bit more than usual but the vet said he’s drinking in the normal range and it’s nothing to worry about, so not sure if this could have anything to do with things or not. Thank you!

Hi, poo output is running 1-2 days behind so the grass could quite well be the culprit. Guinea pigs should be reintroduced to grass slowly to let their tummies get used to it again. Please take him off fresh veg and grass for 24-48 hours or until his poo firms up again only feeding hay, pellets and water. It sounds like he had a small gut disturbance or tummy upset which should settle down in a day or two

:agr:
Please do remove all grass and veg from the diet, feeding only hay to give the digestive system time to settle down. Keep him off grass and veg until poops normalise and then for a further 24 hours after. If things don’t settle after a few days then please do see a vet.

You need to build up access to grass slowly, so if he has been put out for a couple of hours straight off, then it is likely too much too soon. Its best to pick handfuls of grass and take it into them initially, then 10 minutes on grass for a week, then add another 15 minutes for another week etc.
Do also bear in mind, depending on your location, grass tends to still be too cold and too damp for them to be on it. The guide is you need to be able to stand on grass with bare feet for five minutes and not feel cold or damp before piggies can put out on it.

Thank you guys for your helpful replies they’ve been really useful. And I didn’t realise they need to be re introduced to grass gradually so that’s definitely something I’ll bare in mind and make sure we don’t let him have too long out there initially. I’ll take him off his veg until his stomach settles and if this continues over the next few days I’ll get him seen at the vets to rule anything else out. Hopefully he’ll be back to normal soon. Thanks so much again, this forum is so helpful :) @Claire W @Piggies&buns
